Isn't physiotherapy just massage?!
NO! A qualified physiotherapist will carry out a thorough assessment of your horse or pony before engaging in treatment. This will typically start with a gait assessment in walk and trot, both in hand and on the lunge. This is important to rule out lameness which would necessitate referral to your veterinarian for a lameness work-up.
Once this is complete, we will typically do a static assessment of posture. We will then thoroughly assess range of motion of the joints in the neck, spine and legs. We will carry out a comprehensive palpation of the soft tissues. This informs our treatment plan, which of course may involve massage. However as a physiotherapist, we have many treatment techniques at our disposal! More to come on these . . .
