Hey Sam’s pampered pooch fam! 👋 🐶
Just wanted to quickly talk about our pooches and coming into the cooler months or as I like say ‘matting season’ 😦
As it’s starting to become quite chilly 🥶 I understand our fur babies feel it just as much as we do. I want to remind you guys that regular grooming is still very much needed/ required. Your dog doesn’t need to come in and get a full groom if you are keeping on top of brushing at home. If you aren’t able to keep on top of grooming at home I strongly suggest to keep up with grooming with myself. Jumpers are a groomers enemy especially when it comes to long/ curly coats.
- Friction from the jumper causes tangles. 💇♀️
Jumpers constantly rubbing against the same areas (neck, chest, armpits, around the legs) will cause the coat to knot together. So good rule is to put it on just before bed time and take off as soon as they get up! If they have needed to be shaved down and are outside the you can adjusted this rule accordingly but I do suggest as the hair continues to grow back please be sure to keep it off until needed.
- Moisture gets trapped. 💧
Now that it is getting cooler and rain is becoming more consistent, if our dogs are getting damp from rain, dew or even condensation under the coat, the hair can stay moist for longer which encourages matting.
- Mats can for form underneath and unseen. 🫣
A dog may look brushed on the outside, but hidden mats can develop under the jumper where we can’t easily see them. This is why again I say only put the jumper on when necessary.
- Clothing isn’t always necessary. ❌
Many double coated breeds are naturally insulated and may not need extra layers. Unnecessary clothing can sometimes create more coat maintenance than benefit. Our Cavoodles, Groodles any of our oodles will develop matting surprisingly quick.
I could go on for days with this but I’m going to wrap it up here! Please please PLEASE keep up with brushing/ regular grooming this winter ❄️ I do not want to be the bad guy who has to shave your pooch short but I will always do what’s best and necessary for your dogs comfort ❤️
