AN UNFULFILLED DOG WILL LEAD TO UNWANTED BEHAVIOURS

Hard pill to swallow but it’s true, so many problem behaviours stem from not meeting our dogs biological needs.

This can be breed specific or dog specific.

It’s so important to understand why your dog is doing something.
Maybe your dog is becoming super destructive?
Or your dog is barking excessively?
Or you’re having trouble teaching your dog an off switch?

While this isn’t always the answer and sometimes these behaviours are from other deeply routed reasons; making sure your dog is fulfilled mentally and physically is ALWAYS helpful.

If you’re not sure how to meet your dogs requirements, reach out to a trainer and they can help! We’re here for more than just training😊

Understanding Anxiety In Dogs

How can we tell when a dog is anxious?
Anxiety in dogs can look different in each specific dog. Anxious dogs tend to use fight, flight or freeze reactions when they are at threshold.

Sometimes anxiety can even look like excitement. It’s super important you get professional advice from someone who understands canine body language.

It is so important you get on top of your dogs anxiety because it will worsen over time. The body carries stress and if we don’t teach our dogs how to feel confident or provide them with appropriate outlets, it will accumulate and can lead to random fears, severe reactivity, aggression and more.

Signs you’re making progress with your reactive dog!

Although all of these things are true, the MOST important sign that you’re making progress is that you are doing your best!

Your best might look different to someone else’s, but if you are showing up for your dog and putting in your best effort, you are making progress! The second you fully commit to training, you’ll start making progress.

If you have a reactive dog, as tough, disheartening and frustrating as it can be, you are not alone! Even if you can tick one of these things off your list, you’re making progress and it will get better.

Preventing reactivity in your puppy.

What is reactivity?
Reactivity is when a dog responds in a certain way to specific stimuli. Normally by lunging, growling, barking or whining.

Here is how to prevent reactivity in your puppy.

The prime age to do all these things is between 8-16 weeks of age. Or as soon as you get the okay from your vet to get out on walks! You can never start too early.

Already have a puppy or dog with reactivity? Reach out to a professional.

What does a wagging tail really mean?

How many times have you heard or said “his tails wagging so that means he’s friendly”

There is a lot of understanding body language when it comes to dog training, as a lot of our clients know too well😂

A dogs tail is the easiest way to read body language and understanding how they’re feeling. However, it is not based on if the dogs tail is wagging. Things like if your dogs tail is up high, down low, the direction it’s wagging etc have a lot to do with it. Things like their stance, piloerection, lip licking, ears, yawing etc also help us understand.

We hear “my dog was happy and snapped out of nowhere”. It is very unlikely your dog just snapped out of nowhere, it’s very possible you didn’t understand their body language correctly.

WAGGING TAIL DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN HAPPY TAIL

Positive reinforcement is when you ADD something positive to encourage a dog to repeat a behaviour.
For example: giving a treat

Negative reinforcement is when you TAKE AWAY something negative to encourage a dog to repeat behaviour.
For example: releasing pressure on leash

Positive punishment is when you ADD something negative to discourage your dog from repeating a behaviour.

Negative punishment is when you TAKE AWAY something positive to discourage your dog from repeating a behaviour.
For example: stop patting your dog while it’s jumping up

𝓣𝓻𝓪𝓲𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰
Here at JAT&H we use balanced training methods. However, we will always use mostly positive reinforcement and we always start with that quadrant before moving on to others if the dog we’re working with needs it! This is not a one size fits all, all dogs are different and do better with different methods. A common misconception about balanced training is that we are out to scare or suppress dogs, which is not the case! It is just the being able to tell your dog yes and no.

If you prefer to use strictly R+ methods, that is okay! All that matters is that you’re doing the best thing for you and your dog.

If you put 20 dog trainers in a room, none of their methods would be the same. As I said before, this is not a one size fits all. As long as you’re happy and your dog is happy, you’re doing the right thing!

I hope this helps some people understand balanced training better, why we do it and how we utilise these 4 quadrants.

~Food Guarding In Puppies~

𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓲𝓼 𝓻𝓮𝓼𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓬𝓮 𝓰𝓾𝓪𝓻𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰?
Resource guarding is when dogs growl, bark or even bite to protect their food.

𝓦𝓱𝔂 𝓭𝓸 𝓭𝓸𝓰𝓼 𝓭𝓸 𝓲𝓽?
There is a lot of different reasons for why your dog is resource guarding. Maybe they had to fight for their food in their old home, maybe the breeder fed all of the puppies together and the puppies had to fight for their food or felt like they were in a competition for food, maybe it’s genetic or maybe you accidentally created it.

𝓗𝓸𝔀 𝓽𝓸 𝓹𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓷𝓽 𝓲𝓽?
If you have a dog who doesn’t resource guard, here are the steps to take to prevent resource guarding:
1. Don’t mess with your dog when they’re eating!!!
A lot of people (and even trainers) will tell you to touch your dogs food, your dogs face or take their food away when they’re eating. This creates resource guarding. Let your dog eat in peace.

𝓗𝓸𝔀 𝓽𝓸 𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓹 𝓲𝓽?
If you have a dog or puppy who resource guards, here’s what NOT to do:
1. Do NOT scold your dog for resource guarding
2. Do NOT take their food away from them
3. Do NOT ‘discipline’ your dog for resource guarding
4. Do NOT have your dog eat around other pets
^This will only make it worse

Here’s what you can do:
1. Provide them with a safe place to eat where they don’t feel threatened. For example; a crate, play pen or room
2. Give your dog higher value food/treats while they’re eating so they understand when you come near their food, they get good things in return.

That is it! Don’t mess with your dog while they’re eating. Don’t make them feel threatened to eat.

I wouldn’t like it if someone took my dinner away from me😂, my dog won’t like it either🤷🏼‍♀️

-AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIERS-

The results of yesterdays polls showed us that the most common dog breed that follows us are American Staffordshire Terriers!

Lets talk about them…

Here at JAT&H we have worked with a large amount of American Staffordshire Terriers AKA Amstaffs. These dogs generally come to us for reactivity sessions!

If you have a reactive AmStaff, you know the whine I’m talking about.😂

While these dogs do come to us with reactivity issues, they are generally really big people pleasers so they are easy to train!

These beautiful big headed dogs make an extremely great addition to the family.

Like any dog breed, they have specific requirements or they will start acting out.

I, myself (Jasmine) own an American Staffordshire Terrier so I might be a bit biased but I can tell you they are huge cuddle bears. They love cuddling up under blankets and resting their big heads on you.

This is actually the first dog breed I recommend to anyone who is wanting a (medium-large) family dog. This is due to their loyalty towards children.

It is so important that before getting any dog breed you do the correct research to make sure you are capable of reaching the breed requirements.

If you’re needing training for your AmStaff (or any other breed), get in touch!

RAINY DAY DOG TRAINING ACTIVITIES⛈

1. Get outside!
Getting your dog/s outside regardless of the weather is a great way to keep consistent with training and exercise needs. You may need to get them into a bath directly after though😂

2.Go to a pet store or pet friendly store!
This is a great way to get outside and train while still staying dry. Pet stores are a great place to practice self control and engagement around so many things your dog/s is excited by. Bunnings warehouse is a great option for confidence building and exposure.

3.Snuffle mats & licky mats!
These handy mats are a great way to tire out and relax your dog/s. Mental stimulation actually tires out your dog/s a lot more than physical stimulation. They are also amazing for nervous dogs! Sniffing & licking are very natural ways to relax your dog.
TIP: freeze your licky mats for longer lasting licking.

4.Stay in!
Proof all of your in-house training such as place training, crate training, boundary or general obedience training/commands such as sit, stay, lay down, spin, shake, wait, leave it etc.

You can even work on your dogs loose leash walking while inside! For beginners, introducing leash pressure inside is a really good start. For more intense trainer: put treats on the ground and have your dog walk past it.

Rainy weather is not an excuse not to train!🚫

Meet Koa & Koko!

These 2 girls are 10 month old rescued American Staffordshire Terriers.

When their owners rescued Koa & Koko they were told they were ‘untrainable’.

These sisters came to us to work on their severe leash pulling and dog reactivity (specifically to little dogs & cats).

We were told horror stories of them pulling their owners so hard they had no control over them, they would whine upon seeing another dog (if you have a reactive staffy, you know what I mean😂) and had absolutely no engagement from either of them.

Despite being told that Koa & Koko were not a bonded pair - Koko (sandy colouring) would pull herself and slip her harness to get to Koa. These girls are littermates!

These girls did a consultation and a 3 week leash walking program where we taught them leash pressure, heel and ‘park’ - The 3 necessities for leash training!

Todays session was an add-on session to work around more distractions. We worked outside of a dog park and around LOTS of people.

These girls have come extremely far in only a month!

Koa & Kokos owners have put in so much time and consistency in getting these dogs where they want to be as soon as they can be. Consistency is key🔑

Great job girls!🎉

Recall Training🗣

Recall: Ordering your dog to come back to you when called.

Recall is an essential command that you will need throughout your dogs entire life. However, this seems to be the number 1 command people forget about.

For your dog to have maximum freedom, recall is your dogs best friend!

Without a 100% affective recall, your dog should NOT be allowed off leash🙅🏼‍♀️

How to start training your dog a solid recall:

1. Start on a long line!
Here at JAT&H we use 6meter, 9meter or 15meter long lines to teach recall and off leash skills.

2.Start in quiet areas!
Set your dog up for success, environment is an extremely important factor in dog training. If your dog won’t respond at home there is no way they are going to listen to you out and about. Start in your backyard/front yard and work your way up.

3.Only say the command once!
So many dog owners say a command 3-5 times before a dog actually does it. This will NOT proof a command.

4. Over-use it!
A lot of dog owners will only call their dog when they are leaving. Make sure to use it all the time so your dog doesn’t associate recall with going home.

5.Keep it positive!
Your dog is way more likely to respond if their name sounds exciting as opposed to being in trouble/frustration.

If you’re having trouble - reach out to a professional!
