Cats and Autism, something near and dear to my heart. I myself am a mum to 3 young adults on the Autism Spectrum and that is why I began breeding cats after seeing a documentary about the benefits. I began with the beautiful ragdoll and now I breed the amazing Kamaria Siberians North Queensland. I have seen first hand the benefits of a great cat can make to a family. If you ever want a recommendation of a breeder, or a breed please reach out.
๐ฑ Benefits of Cats for People with Autism
Cats can be wonderful companions for autistic people, although every person is different and not every autistic person will find cats calming or helpful.
๐ Emotional comfort โ A familiar cat can provide companionship during difficult or overwhelming moments.
๐ Calming presence โ A quiet cat sitting nearby can create a sense of peace and security.
๐พ Sensory regulation โ Stroking soft fur or listening to a cat purr may be a pleasant sensory experience for some people.
๐ก Predictable routine โ Feeding, grooming and caring for a cat can provide structure and meaningful daily routines.
๐ซถ Reduced loneliness โ Cats can offer companionship without requiring constant conversation or social interaction.
๐ Emotional connection โ Developing a bond with a cat can encourage affection, empathy and recognition of another living being's needs.
๐ฃ๏ธ A bridge to communication โ Talking about a beloved cat can provide an easier way to start conversations with family, friends or other cat lovers. Also having your special person talk for the cat i.e We are hungry, We are angry, We got bullied today.
๐ฟ A quiet companion โ Unlike some social environments, spending time with a cat can allow someone to enjoy companionship without the pressure to talk or perform socially.
โค๏ธ Support during stressful moments โ Some people find that sitting with or gently interacting with their cat helps them settle after sensory or emotional overload.
๐น Fun and joy โ Cats are naturally entertaining! Their personalities, silly antics and quirky behaviour can bring laughter and positive moments.
๐ฑ Most importantly...
A cat shouldn't be viewed as a "treatment" for autism. Rather, the right cat can become a trusted companion who provides comfort, routine, connection and companionship.
And sometimes the best therapy is simply having a furry friend who sits beside you and says, "You don't have to explain yourself. I'm here." โค๏ธ๐พ
Care and Share, Make a difference, education is key.
