Good Heart Farm

Good Heart Farm Putting the heart back into farming. Making the world's first
Sustainable Community Farm™. We are making the world's first Sustainable Community Farm™. Ltd.

Good Heart Farm™ is our 200 acre farm on the edge of Tasmania's Tarkine wilderness. We practice Self-Sufficient Farming™ and do research into sustainable methods of food production by working with nature. From 1997 to 2012 we founded Balingup Sustainable Small Farm - Australia's first Sustainable Small Farm™. Our new farm is currently being set up as:

• a Seed Farm for the production of rare Heri

tage and Heirloom Vegetable varieties
• a Food Plant Sanctuary™ for saving rare varieties of food plants
• a Herb Farm for growing culinary, medicinal and magical herbs
• an Edible Plant Nursery
• an Apothecary garden and place of healing, and
• a Research Facility for Sustainable Living, Sustainability, Self-Sufficiency and Self-Reliance . We preserve our own food and eat with the seasons. The property has a variety of wildlife including numerous birds and native marsupials. We have no TV but an impressive library of self-sufficiency, food growing (vegetables, herbs, fruit, nuts and animals), medicinal plants, natural health, environment, cooking, magic and craft titles. We take interns in the growing season to help with weeding, seed sowing, mulching, herb propagation, seed saving, picking, preserving, etc. Beginners welcome. General housework and farmwork hours and starting times vary with the season. Please note we have a policy of no drugs and no dogs. Good Heart Farm™, Community Farm™, Sustainable Community Farm™, Food Plant Museum™, Mama Earth™, Master of Self-Sufficiency™, Master Gardener (Edible plants)™, Master of Seed Saving™, Stay and Learn™, Good Heart Living™, Food Plant Sanctuary™, The Self-Sufficient Farmer™, Self-Sufficient Farming™, Balingup Sustainable Small Farm™ and Sustainable Small Farm™ are common law trademarks of Mama Earth Pty. We are teaching Good Heart Living™ this summer at the new farm in Parrawe overlooking the Tarkine Wilderness. We won't be teaching everything at this farm as we are still setting it up – lots of wild animals and plants, gardens going in, orchard being established, forest being replanted, etc but we can still teach a lot. After all we have done just about everything to do with self-sufficiency on previous farms and grown all our own food on the last farm. We know what we are doing. This is a great opportunity to learn how to do it from scratch. It’s just a great chance to see what is involved and if you would like to try and live this way.

Want to learn how to live in the wilderness? This is our short course which is running all this summer and autumn.

Late Autumn Self-Sufficiency in NW Tassie

Around about now, if you've done it right and worked hard through summer and autumn, you should be feeling both smug and exhausted. The harvest is in. The seemingly endless supply of apples, potatoes and chestnuts are stored away. You're probably just about ready to put you feet up for a well deserved rest.
Not quite yet though. Made sure your brassica, onions and leeks are all transplanted for spring and early summer? Broad beans in? You should also have made a good start on getting as much firewood stacked and under cover as you can – it usually starts to come down hard towards the end of May, and you want dry wood. Then you can start shelling the beans and chestnuts indoors by the fire. It's a kind of rest. You deserve it.
There's something nice and secure about seeing food put aside for winter while you're warmed by the fire you cut and stacked the firewood for. This is a real life. This is the Good Life.
