Poor Rebel had such a bad case of pneumonia that her lung tissue ruptured, allowing air to leak into her chest and further inhibit her ability to breathe.
Our medicine specialist, Gemma, stabilised Rebel and determined the source of the leaking air with x-rays and a CT scan.
Rebel was anaesthestised by our anaesthetist, Brenda, while Lance, our specialist surgeon, placed chest tubes to allow temporary removal of the leaking air and then performed a thoracotomy to excise the damaged lung tissue. The disease was so extensive that Rebel was left with only 50% of her original lung volume! Luckily, she tolerated the anaesthesia and surgery well and was eating later that night.
Rebel was a very brave patient and was adored by everyone who met her. We´ve loved seeing her for revisits and are so pleased she is recovering well.
