🔥 Kootingal Heat Alert for Our Border Collies! 🔥

It’s currently 3pm and a scorching 36°C here in Kootingal, NSW, and the rest of the week is set to stay hot. Our beautiful Border Collies are energetic, intelligent dogs, but they feel the heat more than we do.

Here are some smart, simple ways to keep your Border Collie safe and comfortable during this hot spell:

🐾 1. Limit Exercise to Early Morning or Late Evening
Border Collies love to run, but midday heat can be dangerous. Keep walks short and choose cooler times of day for play.

💧 2. Provide Lots of Fresh, Cool Water
Make sure they have access to clean water at all times. Adding ice cubes can help keep it cooler for longer.

🌿 3. Create Cool Rest Spots
Set up shaded areas outside or keep them indoors with fans or air-con. Cooling mats or damp towels on the floor work wonders.

🚫 4. Avoid Hot Pavements
If it's too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Try walking on grass or dirt trails instead.

✂️ 5. Keep Grooming Up-to-Date
Regular grooming is essential in hot weather. Border Collies have double coats that actually insulate and help regulate body temperature, but only if kept in good condition.

Brush frequently to remove loose undercoat and prevent matting, which traps heat.

Never shave a Border Collie (unless absolutely necessary); it reduces natural insulation and sun protection.

A light tidy-up around the paws, belly, and hindquarters can add comfort without affecting their coat’s function.

🚿 6. Offer Cooling Activities
A splash in a kiddie pool, a gentle water sprinkler, or frozen treats like pupsicles can help bring their body temperature down.

⚠️ 7. Watch for Signs of Heat Stress
Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, stumbling, or vomiting are warning signs. Move them to a cool area immediately and consult a vet if symptoms don’t improve quickly.

❤️ 8. Keep Their Minds Engaged Indoors
If it’s too hot for running, use puzzle toys, training games, or scent work to burn energy safely.

Let’s look after our furry best mates this wee. Border Collies don’t all slow down just because the weather’s hot, so we have to help them out! Stay cool everyone! 🌞🐶💦

🧠🐶 The Science Behind Puppy Socialisation Windows

- And Why It’s Life-Changing for Your Dog

Most people know puppies need socialisation ...…
But when and why it matters is rooted in fascinating evolutionary science 👇

📌 What is a Socialisation Window?

From 3 to ~16 weeks, a puppy’s brain is in a unique state of development.
During this time, they are biologically wired to:

✨ Explore
✨ Absorb new information
✨ Build confidence
✨ Learn what is “safe” in life

The brain is forming millions of new connections every second.
Every sight, sound, surface, person, animal, and environment becomes a normal part of the world; if introduced safely.

🐺 Where this came from: Evolution

In the wild, wolf pups stayed hidden in the den for the first few weeks of life. Small, blind, helpless.

When they began emerging, evolution needed them to:

✔ Explore bravely
✔ Accept their pack members
✔ Identify prey vs. danger
✔ Learn survival skills quickly

So, nature created a special window where curiosity is stronger than fear 💡
A period where the brain says: “New things are okay!”

But as wolves matured ...…

😨 Fear response increased
🐾 Confidence became experience-based
🚫 Anything unfamiliar = potentially dangerous

This shift was essential for survival.

🎯 Why this matters for YOUR puppy

Domestic puppies still follow this same biological timeline.

If they miss positive exposure during the window, the brain defaults to:
“If I didn’t learn it’s safe, it must be scary!”

This can lead to:

⚠️ Fear of strangers
⚠️ Anxiety in new places
⚠️ Reactivity toward other dogs
⚠️ Noise sensitivity
⚠️ Difficulty coping with change

🌱 How to make the most of it

From 3–16 weeks, puppies should be gently introduced to:

🏡 New environments
👫 Different ages, sizes, appearances of humans
🐾 Well-behaved, vaccinated dogs
🎧 Household & environmental sounds
🚗 Car rides
🐕 Equipment like harnesses, crates, grooming

All positive. slow. controlled.

No forcing. No flooding. Always letting the puppy choose to engage.

💚 Socialisation ≠ Exposure

It’s about safe learning, not overwhelming or scaring them.

🔹 Treats
🔹 Play
🔹 Short bursts of curiosity
🔹 End while the puppy is still happy

These experiences literally wire the brain for confidence.

✨ In short:
Early socialisation isn’t a “training tip”. It’s biological survival programming we must nurture in the modern world.

The world we want them to belong in ❣️

Give your puppy the best chance to grow into a happy, resilient, confident companion 💪🐾

🚗🤢 Car Sickness in Puppies — What’s Really Going On?

Some puppies LOVE adventure… but their tummies? Not so much! If your confident, happy pup suddenly turns into a drooling, nauseous mess in the car — you’re not alone.

Let’s break down why this happens ⬇️

🎯 It’s Not Anxiety… Yet.

Most puppies who “don’t travel well” are actually experiencing motion sickness, not fear.
However, if they feel awful every time they ride ...… that can create car anxiety in the future. So early help is important!

🧠 What Causes Puppy Motion Sickness?

It’s all about the inner ear.

Their balance system is still developing; especially before ~2 years old.

👁 Eyes say: We’re moving!
👂 Inner ear says: But we’re still!
🧠 Brain thinks: Uh-oh ..… that must be poison!
➡️ Cue nausea and vomiting.

That’s the evolutionary reason behind motion sickness. The body tries to protect itself by emptying the stomach.

✔ The GOOD news

Most puppies grow out of it as the inner ear matures. Especially with positive car experiences.

🌟 How to Help Your Puppy Right Now

🟢 Give the car positive associations
• Take fun sessions sitting in the parked car
• Short, slow, smooth drives at first
• Avoid bumpy roads & sharp turns

🟢 Reduce nausea triggers
• No food right before travel (except a small ginger biscuit. It helps settle the tummy!)
• Let in fresh air. Open two windows to avoid that “thumping” pressure
• Avoid strong smells (cleaners, perfumes, food)
• Position so your puppy can see the horizon

🟢 Tire them out first
A relaxed pup travels much better than an excited, wriggly one!

🟢 Talk to your vet
For longer trips, Cerenia can make all the difference. No pup should feel trapped and miserable for an hour. There may be age restrictions on this medication.

✨ Breeders: Early exposure helps!
Short, gentle car rides from 4–6 weeks old can reduce future motion sickness.
The goal? Teach the brain that cars mean fun, not nausea!

💬 Remember:
We’re working on 👉
1️⃣ Inner ear maturity +
2️⃣ Positive emotions around travel

Support both ..… and you’ll have a happy little co-pilot in no time 🐾💚

If your pup struggles with car rides, tell me what you’ve tried!

🌸 Beautiful but Deadly: Azaleas & Dogs

Azaleas may brighten up our gardens, but for our dogs, they can be highly toxic. Even a small amount of leaves, flowers, or nectar can cause serious illness.

🐾 What makes them toxic?
Azaleas contain grayanotoxins, which interfere with how a dog’s heart and muscles function.

⚠️ Symptoms of azalea poisoning may include:

* Drooling or vomiting

* Diarrhoea

* Weakness or trembling

* Low heart rate

* Collapse or seizures

These signs can appear within hours of ingestion and can be life-threatening.

🌿 What to do:
If you suspect your dog has eaten part of an azalea, seek veterinary help immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen. Early treatment can save lives.

💚 Safer garden alternatives:

Consider planting dog-friendly shrubs like camellias, gardenias, or magnolias instead.

Let’s keep our homes beautiful and safe for our Border Collies 🌷🐶
