A really great weekend at Ekka 2025.
Mitchell in open competition in the Novice division picked up the Shoeing and High point buckle.
His young kiwi mate from across the ditch won the pre-novice division.
My Korean Team friends, who have been coming to get tuned up pre competition at our shop for three years all got placings in their forging classes.
I'm very proud of the industry.
My friend Robert Jukes gave the lads a private clinic Wednesday, which I'm sure helped hone all involved for Thursday -Sunday.
Onwards and upwards 💪🍀

This Quarter horse has been diagnosed with Navicular Disease.
Limited amount of work. Been barefoot until now.
8 inches of inch square Ali rockers.
Allows elevation at rest, while allowing the back of the hoof to land heel first during movement.
This type of shoe works best on firm substrate, not muddy or sandy ground.
Had only been trimmed a week prior to shoeing.

Laminitis is a dreadful disease.
Keeping this sweet aged pony comfortable with load sharing offered by the use of heartbars.
Often with chronic laminitic the rotation of P3 leads to demineralisation of the tip . Pedal oestitis.
The lamellar connection is compromised allowing invasion of anaerobic bacteria. Often called seady toe.
That is evident by the missing portion at the front of the hoof pictured.
The key to this style of shoeing is to know the internal anatomy of the hoof, so as to get the loading and fit correct without x-ray

When you travel, you access more styles of our trade.
Certification is an acknowledgement of being able to do things to a standardised level. Horse welfare is enhanced.
Every country I have been lucky to visit has a different skill set to tap into.
Often this is because the mentor back then, was instrumental in the knowledge shared down.
Today we worked on plain stamp massalotte hinds with European styled toes and welding aluminium barshoes for capsular stability with limited traction.
The Ali shoes are something apprentices in Australia need to be able to do to gain certification here. It's not as easy as you might think as it doesn't change colour when it's hot like steel.
First run was successful 💪🇦🇺

My mother used the saying
" Sometimes the mountain doesn't come to you, you must go to the mountain! "
Over the past four week yearly holiday with my long suffering Queen, I have seen the wisdom in here off the cuff remark.
There is so much knowledge out there, and so many knowledgeable people in this Farrier Trade willing to share, if you make the effort to ask
I will post some of the extraordinary forging displays I have recently witnessed across Italy, Germany, England and Scotland.
Most of these people are too humble to talk about how these came about, other than blood sweat and tears.
I am so proud to be in this trade.
Learning and sharing is great for Equine Welfare. ..
Thanks Mitchell Willoughby Dwyer for doing such a wonderful job in my stead. I am very proud of how you handled our business my young friend 🙏

We will be ramping up our business as we have some special people interested in joining our team moving forward.

As my Queen and I transfer from Europe to the United Kingdom, I can report I am having a great learning experience with my farrier family.
Some new, some revision.
In Italy we discussed many different techniques keeping older horses sound into their late teens jumping over 135.
In Germany we worked on Dressage horses working well into their late teens.
We also forged many different types of horse shoes involving surface area and substrate displacement.
The overlap into traditional techniques and modern materials is overwhelming.
The longevity of our equine animal's career can depend on it.
We all enjoy our job keeping them happy and healthy.
I'm so glad we can discuss our ideas with no bias, as professional friends.
Lots of these horses are with veterinarian round table discussions with x-rays and pathology foremost.
It is awesome to be a part of such an important industry.
Some of these stables, house more than 120 horses each.
Mind blowing compared to South East Queensland ✌️💪🇦🇺
Onward and upward 👆

Two years ago was my first trip to America.
By invitation no less.
We shared some ideas over a couple of weeks over a couple of state's.
It's been a great part of my journey as a Farrier.
Hopefully we can continue the conversations all around the world 🙏

I have had great feedback from my clients how Mitchell and Tiffany Gardner are handling things , whilst I am travelling and learning about different challenges we face globally as Farriers.
Environmental factors are most prominent.
Isolation is a big factor for those who don't leave their comfort zone to ask why.
Whether it's certification or competing, we all bring a skill set forward IF we venture outside and risk the initial embarrassment of failure.
The trade is moving forward through improved rationalised techniques .
The World Championship Blacksmiths, The American Farrier Association, The European Federation of Farrier Association, The Worshipful Company of Farriers , The Farrier International Testing System, The Aussie Apprentice Certificate, The New Zealand apprentice system etc.
I'm so lucky to be able to ask my farrier family why they did that. And usually I get a reason based on reputable science.
Because we all want the best practice for the horse.

PS. Lake Como water is cold, the driver is on the wrong side, and the roads are the width of a double bed !!
