are able to interpret your pet’s condition, we use different forms of treatment, such as pharmaceutical medicine, herbal medicine, naturopathy, acupuncture, diet modification and manual manipulation (massage, rehabilitation). Lindi is usually the first voice you hear when you ring us, and the one sorting out your appointment, your reminder and your account — all while running a household where she is, by her own admission, third in the pecking order.

Yes, we Google things mid-consult. You absolutely want us to.

Here is the actual search, live from the clinic: "whats the dose of amoxyclav for a big big dog". Riveting stuff.

Doses change. Guidelines get updated. A vet who is certain about everything without ever checking isn't being confident, they're being lazy — and doses are weight-dependent, so "roughly" isn't good enough when the patient is 45kg.

If you ever see us looking something up, that's the job being done properly. Ask us what we're checking. We'll tell you.

Right — the robots can have the a**l glands. They cannot have this bit.

This is the part of the job no algorithm is getting anywhere near: a nervous dog who has decided you're safe, going soft in your arms in the middle of a busy ward. You can't automate that. You can't rush it either, which is rather the point.

Half this job we'd hand over tomorrow. The other half is the reason we're all still here.

"AI is coming to take your job." Mate. Please. Take it.

We would hand over a**l gland expression tomorrow and not look back once. Sadly the robots have shown no interest whatsoever, so it remains us, a pair of gloves, and a dog who has decided this is the worst thing that has ever happened to anybody.

For what it's worth, most dogs never need this done. If yours is scooting, licking, or suddenly very interested in sitting down hard on your carpet, that's worth a look — it's uncomfortable and it's usually easily sorted.

Following on from earlier this month: resorptive tooth lesions are a dental problem that's almost uniquely feline — the tooth structure itself starts to break down, often starting below the gumline where you can't see it. Cats being cats, they usually give away nothing at home. It's one of the best reasons for a regular dental check, even when your cat seems perfectly happy eating. 🐾

Half the stress of a vet trip for a cat happens before anyone's even examined them — it's the waiting room. That's why ours is separate from the dogs entirely: calm, dark, quiet, with relaxing music instead of barking and boots. Small design choice, genuinely different experience for a nervous cat (and honestly, a nervous owner too). 🐾

A packet of chocolate biscuits, entirely eaten, and a very fast trip to see us. 🐾 Daisy came in after getting into a full packet — chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs process far more slowly than we do, and it's genuinely toxic in the wrong amount. Dr Melody and Dr Sonja needed to induce vomiting to get it out of her system before it could be absorbed, and Daisy handled it (and recovered) like an absolute champion. If your dog ever gets into chocolate — any amount, any type — please call us straight away rather than waiting to see what happens. Faster action makes a real difference.
