“Hmm… tastes like human. I’m outta here!” 🐍✌️

Pretty much every snake in Australia.

Contrary to popular belief, snakes aren’t out looking for people. They’re simply trying to work out what you are, decide you’re not food, and get as far away from you as possible.

“Brown snakes chase people.”

It’s one of the most common things we hear… yet somehow in the age of smartphones, security cameras and social media, there’s still no footage of it actually happening 😂

Maybe that’s because they don’t….

A black brown snake? 🤔🐍

Yep….

Brown snakes, especially eastern browns, can vary massively in colour. They’re not always the classic light brown people expect. Some can be almost black, while others can be grey, tan or even orange-toned depending on age and location.

This particular snake is actually a dugite (Pseudonaja affinis), a species of brown snake found throughout south-western WA and extending along parts of the southern and western SA coastline.

There are 9 species of brown snake in Australia, with the eastern brown being the most widespread and commonly encountered due to its huge range along much of the east coast.

You can’t rely on colour for species identification!

Dropped into the ABC radio broadcast in Tanunda this afternoon for a chat with Narelle on the Afternoon Drive program!

Always great having the chance to talk all things snakes, snake safety and education with a wider audience! 🐍🎙️

I’ve done radio over the phone a few times but a first for me in person!

“She’ll grow up and go pick up brown snakes” 🥴

It’s amazing how many people completely misunderstand what education actually means.

The last time I posted a video of my daughter handling a python, the comment section was full of people convinced we’re teaching her to grab every snake she sees.

Education isn’t teaching kids to fearlessly pick up venomous snakes. It’s teaching respect, awareness, identification and understanding.

The reality is, kids who grow up learning about wildlife are usually the ones LESS likely to make dangerous decisions around it.

That smell… if you know, you know 🤪

Red-bellied black snakes are definitely a bit easier to work with than eastern browns… but they make up for it with that defensive musk 😅

Absolutely terrible smell, and once it’s on you, it’s sticking around for the day! It’s a black snake thing, one thing we don’t need to worry about when dealing with eastern browns!
