On Friday, my gorgeous girl Calico was peacefully euthanised here at home in my lap with Piper beside us. One of her cancers had grown incredibly quickly and was in danger of rupturing and I was not prepared to allow that to happen. It was such a hard decision to make and I thank my close friends who helped me come to terms with the decision which was made out of love and respect for Calico.

The amount of good she had done throughout her life was amazing and she has always been a massive support for Makayla. But even in death, she has continued to help others. Did you know that you can donate your pet’s body to Sydney University to allow upcoming vets to learn on? I stumbled upon the information while I was researching options and memorable items for her. I spoke to my local vets Cessnock Veterinary Hospital and they organised it all making the process smooth and respectful. I take comfort in knowing that even in her death, she was still able to help others. I know this might be a challenging thought for many people, but I’m all about organ donation and don’t see why this can’t apply to our pets. Vets need this sort of thing to help them become better at what they do. It’s a tough job. I even wrote a bit of a eulogy to accompany her paperwork so they would feel a connection to her and respect her for the amazing dog she was.

There will never be another Calico. Give your dogs an extra hug today as they just aren’t here long enough.

Another one of our pups doing fantastic work and making a huge difference in many young lives 🩷

My travels took me to Port Macquarie yesterday to reassess Lovedale Madge for her Kaysadale Farm Therapy/Support Dog recertification. I will be honest in saying I had a few tears listening to the difference she has made and for privacy reasons we can’t post it all here. I asked Kylie, owner, handler and school psychologist, to tell me what is the difference that she’s making in the school community and this was her reply
“Madge has been doing valuable work with all students at the College. In particular she has been working with one of our students all year in preparation for her exam. Working with Madge has helped develop confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging in our community. The amount of love Madge gives out is returned tenfold. She is our favourite staff member and we can’t imagine life without her in our community.” Melts our hearts ♥️ so many of our Lovedale pups are going on to become school therapy/support dogs and therapy dogs for families and workplaces. So proud of you all 🥹🐾♥️
