Peak slug and snail season is here and your autumn veggie patch is exactly what they're after!

They're active at night and after wet weather, which means by the time you spot the damage the next morning, they've already done a lap of your garden.

A few things that actually work:
🐌 Snail pellets - the most reliable way to bring numbers down fast. Scatter around the perimeter of beds and in sheltered spots where they hide during the day, not just on top of the soil.
🐌 Iron-based pellets - a safer option if you have pets, children or native wildlife visiting your garden. Just as effective, and they break down naturally in the soil.
🐌 Physical barriers - copper tape around raised beds and pots is a great long-term solution, particularly for contained bed setups.
🐌 Consistency - reapply regularly and keep on top of it while conditions stay humid.

We stock snail and slug control products in store. Come in and our team will point you in the right direction.

After rain, it's worth giving your chooks a once-over. Damp conditions are one of the biggest contributors to health issues in backyard chickens, and a little attention now goes a long way.

A few things to stay on top of:
🐔 Bedding - if it's wet, replace it. Damp litter is a fast track to respiratory problems.
🐔 Lice and mites - warm, humid conditions are peak time for external parasites. Dust your birds and treat the coop with Pestene Powder or Poultry Dust.
🐔 Worms - muddy runs increase worm exposure. If you haven't wormed recently, now's the time. We stock Kilverm, Chicken Wormer MP and Piperazine solution.
🐔 Gut health - a round of multivitamin and prebiotic supplement through the water is an easy way to keep condition up as the cooler months set in.

We've got everything you need in store, so come in and have a chat with our team about what's right for your flock.

The cooler weather has arrived and that's actually great news for your veggie patch!

Autumn is one of the most rewarding times of year to grow your own food - the heat backs off, watering needs drop, and a whole new range of crops comes into its own.

Here's what to get in the ground now:
🥦 Brassicas - broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale all love the cooler months. Get them in early autumn so they're well established before the cold really sets in.
🫘 Beans & peas - broad beans and sugar snap peas are ideal right now. They're fast, satisfying and incredibly productive for the space they take up.
🥬 Leafy greens - lettuce, silverbeet, spinach, rocket and Asian greens will absolutely thrive from here. These are your best bang-for-buck crops through autumn and winter.
🌿 Root vegetables - beetroot, radish, carrot and spring onion all do well planted now and are great for filling gaps in the garden.
🌿 Herbs - coriander, parsley and garlic are all happy going in this month.

A couple of tips from us: feed your soil before you plant. A good compost or aged manure worked through will make a huge difference to your results. And mulch after planting to hold moisture and regulate soil temperature as nights cool down.

Already thinking about where to put it all? A Vegepod raised bed is a great option if space is tight - the controlled growing environment suits these cool-season crops beautifully.

Pop in and we can help you get sorted with everything you need!

Grocery bills got you thinking about growing your own veggies?

The Vegepod is one of our favourite solutions for anyone who wants to grow fresh veggies at home without the usual headaches. It's been designed to tackle the three biggest reasons home gardens fail: poor soil, inconsistent watering, and damage from pests and weather. The self-watering wicking system, protective cover, and premium growing environment take care of all three - so you're not constantly battling nature just to grow a tomato.

They come in three sizes, and with the optional stand or trolley, you can set one up on a patio, balcony, or courtyard - no digging, no bending, no problem.

These are Australian-designed and genuinely well thought out.

Give us a call on (02) 4423 2359 before you head in to check availability, and we'll help you find the right size for your space.

A bit of Bishops history...

Bishops has been part of the South Coast community for a long time - our story started back in August 1949, when Ray Bishop first opened the doors on Kinghorne Street in Nowra. Over the years the business has grown alongside the region it serves.

In 1994, the store was purchased by Ray’s cousins, the Duncan brothers, and today Michael and Phil Duncan continue to run the business. As the demand for rural supplies grew, Bishops moved in 2005 to Bellevue Street in South Nowra, where you’ll still find the large retail space and warehouse today.

From those beginnings, Bishops has expanded to serve more of the South Coast, with stores now in South Nowra, Bomaderry, Milton and Moruya. But the focus hasn’t changed - it’s always been about helpful advice, practical solutions, and supporting the local community.

More than 70 years on, we’re proud to still be helping farmers, gardeners and pet owners across the region every day!

It combines lucerne and cereal chaff to support healthy digestion and chewing behaviour, along with added vitamin C - an important nutrient for guinea pigs that helps support their overall wellbeing.
