Above is the view from our North Richmond property where we rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abused, neglected and abandoned horses. Established in 1986 with two horses needing help we soon grew and have successfully re-homed around 1500 horses! We take on horses from the RSPCA, Animal Welfare League and members of the public. Around half our herd at any one time are horses from the racing industry, both thoroughbreds from the gallop races and standardbreds from the trot/pace races. We also take on any other breeds from tiny ponies through to larger horses. We refer any donkeys needing rescue onto a specialist donkey rescue group.
Over the years we have tackled horrendous fence injuries, cancer, Cushings disease, laminitis and the general ravages that past health care neglect and poor nutrition cause. We’ve also had many horses that we’ve had to work closely with to try to restore some trust and faith in humankind after sometimes terrible abuse. Those who are too unwell or too traumatised to rehome live out their lives at our sanctuary, never wanting for anything again. We ensure all the horses get the best veterinary, farriery and dental care, along with excellent quality food and clean water. Those lucky enough to go onto new adoptive homes are welcome back at any time should their adopters’ circumstances change and they are no longer able to provide adequate care. This ensures these horses never find themselves in dire circumstances again.
We hold regular volunteer days (see our website for details) where the public are welcome to come along, meet the horses, give them a nice groom and help out with a few chores around the property. People of all ages are welcome (children under supervision of course) regardless of their previous experience with horses. We always have more experienced people able to mentor those new to horses.
We are run entirely by a small committee of volunteers and receive no government funding whatsoever. We rely on the generosity of the public through donations, sponsorship of horses and membership. Please consider becoming involved in one way or another to help these most deserving equines get back on their hooves and into new loving homes!
