We get how tough it is when your Pup starts slowing down. Saffy will be 11 this year and she is just starting to move a bit differently when she jumps up on the bed. Left to herself she chooses the easy option we set up when her older sister needed help. Bring out the ear drops though and she makes the leap from floor to bed where she can lead us on a merry dance until she gives in and has her ear drops.
We often get calls from people making plans and we let them know about the mobile vets. We are blessed to have lots of options for the old ones who increasingly find a vet visit hard.
But when it is really close phone calls are hard so lots of those conversations happen via email or text. We get it, we’d be weeping too and can sound much more coherent over email.
We can really tell when an old, old dog got the best vet care as they aged. They still have good weight on, no pressure sores, no open wounds or sores, and just look so much more peaceful, almost with a smile on their face. Even with the best care that can’t always be the case for unavoidable reasons but you really can tell when their needs were a priority for their family and it really does make our hearts burst.
Sharing how we do this can sometimes make it easier and we find great advice from people who have been though it. Dogs that still enjoy their beach walk, just from a pram or a wheelchair, great ideas for bed steps, elevated feeding bowls, non slip walking mats that make a huge difference to quality of life.
If you haven’t had that conversation with your vet, make an appointment and find out what can help.
