As we head into spring, we’re already seeing a rise in tick cases across our hospitals.

Dr Becc Cassilles joined Sunrise this morning to talk about what to do if you find a tick on your pet, the signs of tick paralysis to watch for, and why prevention is so important.

Tick paralysis is extremely serious and can become life-threatening quickly. The best protection is making sure your pet’s tick prevention is up to date and checking them regularly, especially after time outdoors.

If you find a tick on your pet or notice any signs of weakness, wobbliness, vomiting, changes to their breathing or voice, please contact your vet immediately.

A few minutes checking your pet could save their life. 🐾

Another satisfying clean 🦷✨

Just look at that before and after! A professional dental clean can make an incredible difference, removing built-up plaque and tartar and helping keep your dog’s mouth healthy.

We’ll never get tired of these transformations. 🐶🪥

Unbelievable transformation story!

This little French bulldog first came to see us at SAH under a year old, weak and wobbly in his hind legs. His owners were worried he'd had an accident.

On examination, Remy had marked neurological signs, most likely from spinal cord compression. Some French bulldogs have malformed spinal bones, and the instability this creates can compress the spinal cord. Frenchies can also bleed more into the spinal cord after trauma than other breeds do, which can make things worse.

Remy was sent straight for a CT scan and a surgical opinion. Unfortunately his prognosis wasn't great, and surgery wasn't recommended.

His owners loved their little boy (who wouldn't?) and bought him a trolley for his back legs. Remy had other plans; he became an expert at bum-shuffling around the house at speed instead (see the BEFORE clip!).

While his owners went away, Remy stayed with us. We gave him laser therapy, physio, and plenty of rest. By the time they got home, he could stand and take a few steps.

He's kept up his laser treatment since, and now he runs, plays with the cat, and gets into all sorts of mischief (see the AFTER clip!).

We're not saying this works for every dog with spinal cord compression, a recovery like this isn't common. But when you get a win like this, you hold onto it.

We love you Remy, and we hope your progress keeps going. 💙

Every day is different in a vet hospital. Meet Otis 🐱

Otis is a 9-month-old kitten who came in for a free nurse dental check after giving his owners a fairly good reason to be concerned about his teeth.

He had managed to puncture a hole in their MacBook. 💻

Surprisingly, Otis' teeth were in much better shape than the laptop. His nurse found only a small amount of gingivitis on one side, with no fractured teeth, bad breath or calculus build-up.

His owners mentioned that he does tend to chew on one side of his mouth, so it may be that he simply likes the cold metal of the laptop.

Otis is now starting dental food and his owner is organising a MacBook repair.

Our nurse dental checks are free, quick and an easy way to find out what's going on inside your pet's mouth. 🦷

🐾 Meet Coco!

A few weeks ago, Coco's family spotted a small pink lump in the corner of her eye. It's called "cherry eye," when the gland of the third eyelid pops out of its normal position. It's more common than you'd think, especially in young dogs!

Not long after, a second cherry eye appeared in her other eye too. Our vets kept a close eye on both and reassessed her on the morning of surgery.

Coco came in for bilateral cherry eye repair using the modified Morgan pocket technique, a gentle surgical method that tucks the gland back into place rather than removing it, so it can keep doing its job of keeping her eyes healthy and hydrated.

She went home the same day with some eye ointment, pain relief, and a cone to keep her from rubbing at her eyes while they healed. A few days later at her recheck, both eyes were looking great! 👀💚

Spotted a pink lump in your dog's eye? Cherry eye is very treatable, especially when caught early. Give our team a call to book an assessment.
