If I told you these videos were of the same kitten, would you believe me?

One of the most fascinating things about homozygous (Cu/Cu) Selkirk Rex kittens is how dramatically their coats can change as they grow.

Some start life with very little coat, leaving new owners wondering where all those famous Selkirk curls have gone. Then, over the following months… the magic happens. 🐑

A soft coat appears.
The curls begin to form.
Before you know it, that almost-bare kitten has transformed into a plush, curly teddy bear.

It’s one of my favourite reminders that kittens don’t always grow the way we expect—and sometimes the best things simply take a little time.

🐱 Where Does Your British Shorthair Sit?

Our last post sparked a great discussion.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your thoughts so respectfully.

One thing became very clear…

While opinions differ, many people felt the ideal British Shorthair isn’t necessarily at either end of the spectrum—but somewhere in the middle.

So I thought it would be interesting to continue the conversation.

Below are three illustrations representing different interpretations of British Shorthair type.

A – More moderate, closer to the traditional interpretation.

B – A balanced, modern type that combines strong breed characteristics while maintaining a sweet expression.

C – A more extreme modern interpretation with greater doming and a shorter facial profile.

These images are not intended to say one is “right” and another is “wrong”. They are simply an educational tool to encourage discussion about how we each interpret breed type.

British Shorthair Type – Where Is the Balance?

The British Shorthair has changed significantly over the past 20–30 years. As breeding has progressed, many cats have developed rounder heads, stronger doming, shorter noses, and smaller ears features that create the much-loved “teddy bear” appearance.

However, this has also sparked discussion within the cat fancy.

Some judges and long time breeders feel the breed is becoming too extreme, while others believe today’s cats are simply an improvement in type.

So what does the breed standard actually call for?

✅ A large, round head
✅ Full cheeks
✅ Small, well-spaced ears
✅ Large, round, open eyes
✅ A short, broad nose with a gentle break
✅ A strong chin
✅ Heavy bone and a cobby body

The challenge for breeders is maintaining these beautiful features while preserving balance, expression, and function.

A very short nose or an exaggerated break can create a striking look, but many breeders aim to avoid losing the soft, sweet expression that has always made British Shorthairs so distinctive.

There is no single “perfect” look, and different judges, registries, and breeders will naturally have different preferences. Healthy discussion helps us all continue improving the breed.
