🐾🍫 Attention, Dog Lovers! 🍫🐾

Did you know that chocolate is toxic to our furry friends? Just a small amount can cause serious health issues!

Here are the dangers of chocolate for dogs:

1. Theobromine: Dogs metabolise this compound much more slowly than humans, leading to toxicity.

2. Symptoms to Watch For: Vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, and seizures can all occur after chocolate consumption.

3. Types of Chocolate Matter: Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are more dangerous than milk chocolate due to higher theobromine levels.

4. Immediate Action Needed: If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, contact your vet right away!

Let's keep our pups safe and remind Easter Bunny to steer clear of chocolate treats! ❤️🐶

🚨 We’re seeing multiple reports of canine parvovirus across Southern Tasmania, including cases shared within our local general practice community.

Parvovirus spreads easily between dogs and can cause severe illness, particularly in young puppies and dogs that are not fully vaccinated.

Dog owners are urged to:
• Ensure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date
• Avoid public parks, dog parks and shared areas for now
• Practice good hygiene (disinfect shoes, surfaces and equipment)
• Seek immediate veterinary care if your dog shows symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or loss of appetite

⚠️ Parvovirus can survive in the environment for long periods, making prevention and vaccination especially important.

Keep your dogs safe and spread the word (not the virus). For further advice, contact your local veterinarian.

He might look sweet and innocent but this gorgeous boy, Theo has been through quite the battle! He presented for straining to urinate, and with investigation we found a large kidney stone causing a complete urinary blockage. After consultations with specialists, it was decided that removal of the affected kidney was the best option. Theo under went this surgery (nephrectomy) at Vet in the Valley Animal Hospital by Dr. Abbie. We are proud to say he has made a fantastic recovery and is kicking goals minus a kidney!

As the weather starts to get cooler it’s time to start thinking about our older pets. Pain can look different for these guys- they don’t necessarily cry out, moan or whimper. Pain can look more like less playtime, shorter walks, less zoomies, more sleeping, less activity, less interaction. It’s important we recognise when life starts changing so we can support them to allow the best quality of life as possible.

Do you think your dog is slowing down? Would you like to chat about the tips and tricks to make them more comfortable?
