Snow day on the mountain!

Faverolles are a great choice for cold climates as their small comb and wattles reduce risk from cold damage. The flip side is they can struggle a little more in the heat.

People often get concerned with cold temperatures in the coop for their flock. Their feathers have excellent insulating properties and add in a warm roost mate to snuggle against.

In terms of coop construction for Tasmanian conditions, it needs to be both draft free and well ventilated. If you can design both of those elements into your coop, additional insulation or external heating is not required.

Salmon Faverolles are not the best problem solvers. They’re never the ones to somehow escape your secure pen. They’re the last the work out how to fly over a livestock fence, and if they do it’s only because there was snacks on the other side! They have a stomach for a brain.

However, this lack of cognitive ability does turn into a strength in the correct context. This makes them a perfect candidate for a career as a backyard pet as neurons are never fired at the possibility of greener pastures. Except if your neighbours have better snacks.

Yesterday I heard cheeping from the wrong direction, and I find Grandma Faverolles x welsummer with three new chicks. As ravens find little chicks a tasty treat, I needed to get them into a safer place. I manage to coax them into a little Chook tractor with food.

This morning I find one of the chicks had squeezed out a gap and looked like it had shed its mortal coil. I pick it up and it’s as cold as a stone but still mostly floppy so hadn’t been dead long. It’s likely only been out this morning as it has a full crop. But then it gives a ‘death gasp’.

So, down my top it goes. It’s only breathing is intermittent gasps at long intervals, so I don’t hold out much hope. Then its gasps gradually become more frequent and turn into regular breaths. It still feels so cold against my skin. I dither around for 2hr doing chores one handed, holding it so it doesn’t slid straight through my shirt. It slowly becomes responsive and eventually can hold its tiny head up by itself. When starts cheeping when disturbed and I can see it’s able to stand again, I let it go back with its family.

Hopefully, no more intervention is required!

These two lovely ladies where very accepting. Not only to co-parent, but also to adopt these chicks that weren’t their own.

Often, day old chicks are put under broody hens instead of using a brooder. Which can work very well as hens are much more energy efficient! Not every broody hen will accept baby chicks, but these two accepted this brood when they were just over 2 weeks old.

Such good ladies!
