Nearly 21 years young and still thriving 💙

Mac the Standardbred is such a lovely example of what can happen when older horses are supported with care and consistency. Owned and loved by Rebecca Allan and her mum, he continues to look and feel fantastic, thanks to the care and attention they put into every part of his management.

As our horses age, it becomes even more important to stay on top of the little things before they become big things. Regular bodywork, good hoof care, regular saddle checks and equine dentistry all play a huge role in helping older horses (any horses) stay comfortable, strong and active.

I support Mac to feel good in his body so he can do this cool stuff! He also has benefited from a set of front Scoots which help support his comfort and movement. Rebecca is incredibly proactive with his care, and it really shows in how well he continues to move and enjoy his work.

Every horse is unique, and thoughtful and consistent care really can make such a difference as they get older 💙

👂 Listen to the joy!! That's what its all about :)

This 👇🏻 is exactly why I talk about pole work so much with my clients.
Simple poles can make a huge difference to balance, coordination, posture, body awareness and how a horse uses themselves through the body when used thoughtfully and correctly. Worth a read!
Enjoy 💙

A recent study from the University of Tennessee provided strong support for something trainers, movement specialists, and bodyworkers have observed for years:

Ground poles significantly increase activation of important postural and core muscles in horses.

What the Study Found

Walking over ground poles increased activity in:

• Longissimus dorsi — a major topline and spinal support muscle
• Abdominal muscles — critical for core stability and support of the spine

Even at the walk, poles require the horse to:

• Lift the limbs higher
• Stabilize the trunk more actively
• Organize posture and balance with greater precision
• Continuously adjust limb placement and timing

At the trot, researchers also found increased activation of the abdominal muscles.

Trotting over poles requires greater dynamic stabilization, and the increased limb elevation demands more coordinated control of the trunk, pelvis, and spine.

What This Means

These findings support the long-standing use of cavaletti and ground poles as a low-impact way to:

• Strengthen the topline
• Improve abdominal engagement
• Support spinal stability
• Enhance proprioception and coordination
• Encourage improved posture and self-carriage
• Develop better movement organization through the whole body

One of the most important aspects of pole work is that it influences both sides of the postural system:

• The dorsal chain — including the longissimus muscles along the back
• The ventral chain — including the abdominal support system

This balance is essential for efficient movement, force transfer, and development of a healthy, functional topline.

But pole work is not only muscular.

It is neurological.

Each pole creates a movement problem the horse must solve in real time.

The horse has to:

• Judge distance
• Adjust stride length
• Control timing
• Stabilize the trunk
• Organize the limbs in space
• Adapt moment-to-moment to changing demands

That process requires attention, coordination, body awareness, and ongoing nervous system regulation.

In many horses, poles appear to improve focus not simply because the horse is “behaving,” but because the nervous system is becoming more engaged and organized around the task.

Pole work may also influence neurological tone — the background level of muscular and nervous system readiness that affects posture, movement quality, stiffness, and coordination.

For some horses, this can help reduce excessive bracing and improve adaptability through the body.
For others, it can help improve postural engagement and overall organization.

Why It Matters

Regular pole work can benefit many types of horses:

• Young horses developing coordination and posture
• Performance horses improving strength, agility, movement quality, and limb awareness
• Horses rebuilding core control and stability after periods of weakness or reduced work
• Older horses maintaining mobility, coordination, and movement confidence

Importantly, many of these benefits occur even at the walk, making poles accessible to horses across a wide range of ages, disciplines, and fitness levels.

Rather than simply “making horses pick up their feet,” poles appear to challenge the nervous system, postural system, sensory system, and muscular system together — encouraging the horse to organize movement with greater control, awareness, and adaptability.

Some horses change your life… and some people change a horse’s life 💙

Doug is one of those horses.

When Taylah first received Doug’s kissing spine diagnosis, the road ahead felt very uncertain. But if there’s one thing Taylah has never lacked, it’s commitment to this horse.

Over the past months she has shown incredible patience, consistency and love, doing everything possible to support Doug’s recovery. With careful veterinary guidance, thoughtful training and a slow, steady rebuilding of strength, every step has been taken with Doug’s welfare at the centre.

Doug is now moving into canter work, and Taylah is starting to think about competing again, something that once felt a very long way off.

As a CoolStride sponsored rider, it’s been a privilege to support Doug with regular bodywork, as he continues to rebuild his strength and function.

Rehabilitation journeys like this however still need the support of a small village. It's a team approach; veterinary care, careful training, supportive bodywork, family and friends and an owner who refuses to give up on their horse.

The real story here is though is Taylah.

Her patience, hard work and consistency and of course her unwavering love for Doug.

Watching a partnership come through something like this is pretty special, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for these two.

Because sometimes the best recoveries come from someone who simply loves their horse enough to keep showing up 💙

After a jam-packed (and very hot!) Geraldton run this weekend supporting some wonderful horses and their hoomans, I’m now taking bookings for my next Geraldton trip on 2nd & 3rd May.

I’ll be travelling from Neergabby to Geraldton, stopping along the way, so if your horse is due for bodywork, now is the time to book in.

Very limited capacity for this run already, so I’d encourage booking early. However, due to growing demand, my Geraldton visits will now be every 8 weeks 🎉

Send me a message to secure your horse’s spot for bodywork or Scoots assessment and fitting.

Every horse is unique, and it’s always such a privilege to support these beautiful horses to feel and move their best.

Alison 💙
