H5 bird flu has been confirmed in our local Narooma birds. While the risk to people remains low, we do need to be mindful that sick birds may carry the virus and take a few extra precautions before assisting them.
If you encounter a sick or dead bird, please do not touch it. Call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 and follow their instructions.
If you are bringing a sick or injured bird to the clinic, whether wild or a pet, please remain outside and contact the clinic when you arrive. We will begin the consultation with you outside as an added precaution.
We are working closely with National Parks to provide timely testing and surveillance for any suspected cases. Over the next few weeks, you may notice our triage and testing unit set up in the car park. Please do not enter any taped-off or restricted areas.
Importantly, we are still seeing and caring for wildlife, including birds, with some additional procedures now in place.
If you have any questions about our new procedures, we are very happy to answer them, so please don’t hesitate to ask. 🧡
