🐾 Senior Spotlight ~ LIZZY’S ARTHRITIS JOURNEY 🐾

Arthritis can slowly affect our pets’ mobility, comfort, and quality of life — often more than owners realise.

This video shows Lizzy before and after starting arthritis treatment ❤️

Like many senior dogs, Lizzy had started slowing down and becoming stiff, especially after resting. After beginning treatment, her comfort and mobility noticeably improved.

At our clinic, we commonly use treatments such as:
✔️ Beransa monthly injections
✔️ Cartrophen joint support injections
✔️ Weight and mobility management plans

Our goal is simple:
🐶 Keep pets comfortable
🐶 Keep them moving
🐶 Keep them enjoying life

If your dog is slowing down, reluctant to jump, stiff after rest, or not enjoying walks like they used to — arthritis may be playing a role.

🐾 ARTHRITIS IN PETS - IT’S MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK 🐾

Did you know that around 1 in 5 adult dogs develop arthritis, with the numbers increasing significantly as pets age? Large breed dogs can also develop arthritis earlier, as they tend to age faster than smaller breeds 🩺

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions we see in pets and unfortunately, it is irreversible. While we can’t cure arthritis, early intervention and ongoing management can make a huge difference to a pet’s comfort and quality of life 💙

Many pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort and pain, often not showing obvious signs until the arthritis has become more advanced and particularly painful.

Signs of arthritis may include:
🐶 Stiffness after resting
🐶 Slower on walks
🐶 Difficulty jumping or climbing stairs
🐶 Sleeping more
🐱 Cats jumping less or grooming less

The good news is that at Rural Vets, we have excellent options available to help keep your pets comfortable and active 🩺

At our clinic, we routinely use:
✔️ Beransa monthly injections
✔️ Cartrophen joint support injections
✔️ Joint supplements such as 4Cyte
Supplements like 4Cyte can be a great early support option to help maintain joint health, especially in pets beginning to show mild signs of stiffness or those predisposed to arthritis. However, once significant arthritis is present, additional treatments are often needed to properly manage pain and mobility.

Many owners notice significant improvements in comfort, mobility, and quality of life after starting treatment 🐾

🐾 Senior pet spotlight - Meet Titan 🐾

Titan recently visited us for his annual senior health check. At home, he was happy, comfortable, and showing no obvious signs that anything was wrong ❤️

As part of his check-up, we performed senior blood testing including an SDMA test, which can help identify kidney disease in its early stages.

Titan’s results indicated early kidney disease — something that often develops quietly and can be difficult to detect without blood testing.

Although kidney disease can’t be cured, detecting it early gives his pawrents the opportunity to make supportive changes at home to help slow progression and maintain his quality of life for as long as possible 💙

Stories like Titan’s are exactly why senior health screening is so important. Many older pets can appear perfectly well while changes are happening internally.

If your senior pet is due for a check-up, speak with our team about whether a senior health screen may be recommended 🩺

🩸 WHY ARE BLOOD TESTS IMPORTANT FOR SENIOR PETS? 🩸

As pets age, important changes can happen internally long before they show obvious signs at home.

Pets also age much faster than we do. So while one year may not seem like long to us, it can equal several years of ageing for our pets. That means health changes can develop surprisingly quickly, especially in senior dogs and cats.

Most pets are considered “senior” from around 7 years of age, although larger dog breeds may be considered seniors even earlier.
That’s why routine blood testing is such an important part of senior pet care 🩺

At Rural Vets, our in house senior blood testing may include:
✔️ Biochemistry
✔️ Haematology
✔️ SDMA testing for early kidney disease
✔️ T4 thyroid testing in cats

These tests can help us detect:
🐾 Kidney disease
🐾 Liver disease
🐾 Diabetes
🐾 Thyroid disease
🐾 Anaemia or infection

Early detection often means earlier treatment and better quality of life.

If your senior pet hasn’t had a health check or blood tests recently, now is a great time to book a senior health screen and help keep them feeling their best ❤️

🐾 SENIOR PET SPOTLIGHT 🐾

As our pets get older, their health needs change and subtle signs of illness can easily be missed.

Many senior pets simply “slow down” gradually, but this can sometimes be linked to pain, arthritis, kidney disease, thyroid disease, dental disease, or other age-related conditions.

Regular senior health checks help us detect problems earlier and keep pets happier and more comfortable for longer ❤️

Signs your senior pet may benefit from a check-up:
✔️ Sleeping more
✔️ Slowing down on walks
✔️ Weight changes
✔️ Drinking more water
✔️ Stiffness or difficulty getting up
✔️ Changes in appetite or behaviour

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing helpful information on all things senior care 🩺🐶🐱

Because ageing pets deserve comfort, support, and the best quality of life every step of the way ❤️

Meet Frank 😍

Frank spent the day recovering from his castrate procedure with his teddy close by and plenty of cosy blankets to keep him comfortable.

Desexing is an important part of your pet’s health care, helping to prevent unwanted litters while also providing a range of long-term health and behavioural benefits.

We know a vet visit can be a big day for our furry friends, so we do our best to make recovery as calm, warm and stress-free as possible. Safe to say Frank settled in pretty well. 💙

Seven tiny supervisors showed up today… and productivity immediately dropped to zero 🐾😄

This blue heeler crew came in for their first vaccinations and microchips, but mostly they specialised in causing chaos, stealing hearts, and attempting coordinated escape missions.

Safe to say, the best kind of interruption to a busy day.

Vaccinating protects them while their immune systems are still developing, and microchipping means they’ll always have a way back if they get lost. Simple steps that make a lifelong difference.

Tomorrow is World Vet Day 🐾

We’d like to thank our incredible vet team for everything they do. From long days on the road to after-hours callouts, your dedication to our clients, their animals, and the wider community means so much.

What we love most is how unique each of you are. Every vet brings their own strengths, stories, and heart to the job, and it’s that individuality that makes our team so special. Whether it’s a calm presence in an emergency, a laugh on a tough day, or going the extra mile when it matters most, you all make a difference in your own way.

We know so many of you have your own stories, the emergencies, the saves, the quiet wins, and the moments that mattered most.

We’d love to hear them 💬
If one of our vets has made a difference to you or your animals, share your favourite story or memory in the comments below.

Thank you for trusting us to be part of your farms, your animals, and your lives. 💚
