If you don't like donkeys, don't work with them. They won't like you back, they'll let you know, and you'll traumatize them with rough treatment.

If you're interested in understanding donkeys, read on.

🫏Donkeys 101 for Farriers 🫏

Donkeys do not like sustained pressure. Do not snub them to anything. Do not rope and hold their leg until they stop kicking. Do not hobble them or tie a leg up. Do not ear twitch them.

If you do any of the above (with the exception of the rope around the leg, that can be done thoughtfully!), that donkey will never trust you and possibly other farriers that come behind you. You may get that one trim halfway done but you've caused so much damage, that donkey may never let you touch them again.

Donkeys DO like being taught to accept appropriate, limited pressure. They do like going at their own pace as they trust you more. They do like treats and scratches. They do like you observing and respecting their threshold. They do like to be trimmed near their donkey friends. They do like praise and affection.

If you meet a donkey, and they've been trained for the farrier, and they like you - great, congratulations, trim away.

If you meet a donkey and the owner can't catch them, they shy away when you reach to touch them, they turn their butt to you like they got goosed, they flinch away from your touch, or they walk away, they are not ready for a full trim.

It's not uncommon for my first trim appointment with a donkey to be a meet and great. I'll bring treats, I'll see what they'll offer me *without pressure* and then that's our baseline to work from.

Next steps - discuss sedation and hiring a trainer.

If the feet are extremely overgrown, schedule a joint vet/farrier appointment and have the vet sedate to get their feet done safely. Then the training begins.

If their feet can wait, start with the training.

If they're in the middle, and/or the owner can successfully sedate, then trim, train, and wean off the sedation over time.

While the donkey is sedated, keep your energy aware but very quiet. Whisper with the owner and the vet/trainer. Limit your touch of the donkey other than lifting/holding the legs and feet. Work quickly. Watch their balance and let them have a break if they need to readjust.

If you get a tail swish, an attempted kick, they drag their mouth on the ground, or they try to bite you, pay attention. They may not be as sedated as you hoped or they're waking up. End your trim before they show too many signs of distress. Walk away early!

If you think any of the above is bu****it, then consider this. Donkeys can kick with their hind legs hard in pretty much any direction including at your head while you're holding up a front hoof. Their aim is good. They will bite if provoked. They are not domesticated horses with the tolerance for poking and prodding and pushing. They hold a grudge. They remember and never forget.

So for your safety and theirs, be smart.

If a donkey tells you to f**k off, listen the first time.

If you have to heavily sedate AND restrain a donkey to get them trimmed, they may not recover their trust in you or the vet.

If the owner will not sedate or train, do not trim for them.

If the donkey really doesn't trust you but loves their owner, teach their owner to trim.

If a donkey likes you, you'll find your heart absolutely melted with how soft and sweet they are. Holding up their feet is like working on air. They rest their head on you while you work on them or a friend. They nose your pockets for treats. They stand nearby, eyes closed, meditating. Donkeys have such a special energy and presence.

What else have you learned about working with our donkey friends?

After much discussion in the industry, I’m excited to introduce a new premium service:
⚡ EXPRESS TRIM ⚡
3 minutes per horse
No fuss, no finish
“Quantity not Quality” 👌
Starting at $40

Please note: results may vary, horses must have unicorn horns to receive this service and perfect feet that do not actually grow.

Shared from a lovely farrier in Victoria
If the fuel doesnt go down soon, I will also be adding a $10 property fee as of next week 6th April
I dont want to but I do a small number of horses, choosing balanced quality care over quantity business care.

Fuel prices have increased significantly over the past month, and are now sitting around $3.20/L locally and climbing with some people forecasting up to $5/L or more.

Based on my actual fuel usage, this is *currently* costing my business approximately $16 *more* per stop than it previously did.

(Fun side note - if it does hit $5/L it will cost me an additional $39/stop approx compared to last month - so lets all hope it starts dropping soon 🙃).

Unfortunately, this isn’t something I can continue to absorb, so a few changes will be coming into effect.

🚗 Travel & Fuel Changes🚗
🥕The existing $20 per property travel fee remains in place (this covered a portion of the preexisting fuel costs, vehicle servicing, tyres etc).

🥕A temporary additional $10 per property fuel crisis charge will be applied to all stops outside of 3717 from Thursday 2nd April
- This is in addition to the existing travel fee
- It will be reviewed and removed if/when diesel returns below $2/L in the near future
- It may increase if fuel prices continue to rise

🥕Clients within 5km of my home will continue to have no travel charges applied for now

🥕Clients within the 3717 postcode will have no increase to their existing travel charges for now

🥕For clients outside 3717:
Travel will now be applied to all services, including shoeings
(Previously I often absorbed this cost for shoeing appointments to keep it more affordable)

📅 Cancellations & No-Shows📅
To keep routes viable and fair to other clients:
🥕24 hours or less notice → 50% of booked labour (existing policy, now strictly enforced)

🥕Less than 6 hours notice, no-shows, or horses not caught/ready within 15 minutes → Full labour + travel charges apply

🥕Shoes/materials will not be charged if not used on cancellations,
unless they were special ordered specifically for your horse

🔁 Scheduling Changes
I’ve recently adjusted some routes to reduce physical strain, however due to fuel costs I may need to re-route again to improve efficiency.

This helps keep travel costs down across the board and maintain service consistency. These changes are necessary to continue providing a reliable mobile service for my existing business model of smaller recreational horse stops.

For some clients, I am considering offering a service every 6th Sunday if there is enough interest to help spread trims out a little more if necessary - this will possibly only be available to clients in the Yarra Glen to Yarra Valley area but will depend on expressions on interest so please reach out of this is something that might help you spread costs out a little.

Haul-in appts are able to be considered on a case by case, but just bear in mind your horse will have to behave in a new environment, and it is likely to cost you much more than $30 to tow your horse to me in Murrindindi.

Winter is on its way 😱

Here's how you can best prep for the farrier in winter weather:

✅ Make sure Fluffy is clean and dry. Brush off that caked on mud.

❌ Fluffy is not standing in mud or loose ground. A solid, firm, dry surface will yield the best work achieved by your farrier. So your getting your monies worth on high quality hoof care. A cheap flooring solution is a large rubber mat from Bunnings etc. Just make sure Fluffy is well practiced in standing on it.

✅ Take Fluffy's wet rugs off. We would like to remain dry the rest of the day. Dry rugs can stay on to keep Fluffy warm.

✅ Pick out Fluffy's mud balled feet.

✅ Brush/wipe off Fluffy's muddy feet and legs. Make sure you have a good stash of old towels.

❌ Hose legs. Wet legs = Wet farrier. 💧

✅ Provide shelter where possible. Farriers are like cats, we DON'T like getting wet. Have you ever wondered why your farrier stopped returning to your property over winter 🤔

✅ A hot drink. Warm up your farrier with a hot cuppa. You'd be surprised how much we appreciate such a small gesture ☕😍

❌ Have Fluffy and friends hanging out in the paddock upon our arrival. We want to get working straight away so we can get out of the weather. Please have them caught early. 🐴🐴
