Our big BEAUTIFUL Care Bear suffered a seizure on Saturday. He was lay under the kitchen table soaking up the sun rays, enjoying a well-deserved afternoon snooze when he suddenly leaped up and seemed to attempt to run away from something. His back legs did not work at all and he ended up scrunched and twisted into a ball with his neck strained to one side, violently shaking and one eye and jowl twitching frantically. It was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed and the look in his eyes as he searched our faces for an answer and our reassurance will stay with me forever. We honestly thought that we were losing him right there in our kitchen. It felt like hours but within a few minutes he seemed ok again, still a bit shaky but walking normally and acting like our usual gentle boy.
We rushed him to the vets where they determined he had experienced a seizure. We are running tests to try and find out if there is a root cause of why this happened but the most likely outcome is idiopathic seizure and that there is no ultimate ‘cure’ for it and it is likely to happen again, whether it be in a week, a month or a year.
My question to you beautiful people is, do you have any experience of this? Given how common this apparently is, it surprised me that through the years, of all the hundreds of dogs I’ve been fortunate enough to live with, work with and care for that I’ve never experienced this before. If this is something that happens to Bear on a regular basis, the only comfort to me is that we know it’s not life threatening and that so long as we keep him safe whilst it is happening, he will come out the other side again.
If you have any experience of this, are there any signs to look out for that might indicate we are close to a seizure? How do you manage the situation if you need to leave your dog alone? Particularly in multiple dog households? We are lucky enough that Bear spends pretty much 99.9% of his time with us so is rarely left alone but it terrifies me that it could happen any time.
Bear is our big, loud, protector and he takes his job of making sure everyone is safe & happy very seriously. It’s our turn to protect you now Care Bear🐻
