With the summer holidays ahead, I’m looking at a long period with little income. At this time every year I have to make sure that I have enough of a stockpile of dog food, grooming and medications to get me through to the start of the next school year. It’s going to be particularly tight this year, so I actually considered going back to hybrid feeding. That is adding a bit of kibble to their diet.
Would the savings be worth it?
Here’s the math:
I jumped on the Advance site to see how much I’d need to feed a 25kg active dog (all four Doods eat about the same amount: equivalent to what a 25kg dog consumes on Big Dog BARF).
A 25kg dog requires 3 cups of kibble per day.
I asked Advance how heavy a cup was: 100g.
So 300g each per day, or1.2kg of kibble a day for four active Doods.
13kg of advance large oodle is $145.95 on their site.
$145.95/13 is around $11.23 per kg.
$11.23 x 1.2 =$13.48 per day
$13.48 x 7 =$94.36 per week…
If you look at my previous meal prep posts, most tally up to about $80/week, including supplements! And, feeding fresh means I get to control the diversity and hygiene of the food they eat. They eat biologically appropriate, real food, rather than inflammatory and inappropriate, carb heavy biscuits…
So, will I be hybrid feeding this school holidays? Hell no!
Instead, I’m going to try to feed a bit of chicken again, as that really does help to cut costs. It’s possible that, since Aug has been off the chicken for so long, I might be able to feed it again without any issues. I have a bit of BD BARF rolls, which can’t be cooked, but I might just get some chicken mince from Wondai Premium Pet Food so I can cook it up, and let some of the chemicals from processing to evaporate away. I think that will make a big difference to Augie and his chicken bum breath!
Wish us luck!
