Layla 🌈
(2012 – 2025)
We want to thank everyone who has followed along with Layla’s journey over the past six days — what we hoped would be an uneventful recovery.
Layla had been up and down all weekend and just seemed a little lost. On Saturday morning, we took her back to the vet as she wasn’t looking well. She perked up a little after some time in the oxygen box and a frusemide injection.
By Monday morning, when we went to give her tablets, we noticed her gums were pale.
We were seen immediately for vital checks, and the vet was very honest about her guarded prognosis. Further tests showed things had changed dramatically since her pre-surgery blood work, her bilirubin and other markers were extremely high.
Her liver and kidneys were no longer functioning properly. To help her body flush out toxins, she would have needed large amounts of fluids, but giving that much would have placed too much strain on her heart. Fix one problem, and it would have caused another.
It was overwhelming, and though we always try to stay positive, the X-rays showed an enlarged kidney and what looked like a possible foreign body but it was the least of her worries.
It’s been such a sad day for us. Writing this now, we can only reflect on what a wonderful life our girl, Layla Dash Casserly, had over the past 13 years, beach trips, travelling across the Nullarbor in the motorhome, café adventures, and the privilege of spending the past eight years working from home with her by our side.
She adored her bestie Luna, loved sunbaking, naps, cuddles, and kisses, and always preferred to sleep in her own bed. She was our little pumpkin, princess, and whaler Layla the sweetest soul with the biggest heart.
The team did everything they could, and we’re so grateful for their honesty, care, and compassion.
Just six weeks after saying goodbye to our 16-year-old girl, we weren’t ready to face another loss.
