On an earlier post you will have seen some details from a Hilltop blood flock that has been buying Hilltop rams for the last 22 yrs, at their annual shearing in August. The ewes listed averaged 5.6 kgs with a top fleece weight of 8.1 kgs. Every skirted fleece from that mob of ewes went into the one line of wool.

Eight ewes were then selected on performance and conformation to be lambed separately and mothered up for pedigree recording. 15 lambs were born and survived from these eight ewes.
So what we can see from these commercial Hilltop blood ewes are a combination of high performance with both their fleece production and fertility. All this in an extraordinary dry time.

Grattai Station located at Mudgee have been using Hilltop rams for 22 years and average 17 microns. Shearing last week and some impressive results from across their flock.

Mob of 7 yr old Hilltop Stud ewes. Average micron 17. Average body weight 60 kgs. Also pictured is HT 120431 with a photo of her wool opened up along her top line. She has 5 & 1/2 months wool growth, and weighs in at 65 kgs. Hilltop ewes are true dual purpose merinos with high quality, well aligned, white wools.

Crutching Stud ewes. Crutching is a great time to assess the merits of an individual ewe. Particularly in regards to muscle, fat, and body weight. In addition to these traits you get to see their feet up close and belly wool. At Hilltop Merino Stud we have measured our rams every year since the start of Merino Select and use and display their ASBVs at our annual ram sale. But we also like to see our sheep up close and using our hands. This way we get a good balance between the measurable science and a hardy, good doing animal.

Hilltop Merino Stud’s Adam Mort with purchaser of the top priced ram Angus McIntosh Gundawanna Molong and Ebony Hewitt. Top price of $3100 was for Lot 6, HT7112 who was sired by Hazeldean 3394. Born a twin HT 7112 was 15.6 microns, 100% CF, with ASBVs of 15% for YCFW, -1.8 for YFD, 8.6 for YSL and 154 for MP+.
McIntosh Pastoral took home a draft of eight rams which also included the 2nd top priced ram, Lot 21 another Hazeldean 3394 son for $2600. HT 7139 was 15.3 microns, 100% CF, 15% for YCFW, -2.0 for YFD, 8.1 for YSL, and 158 for MP+.
