Windamere Horse Haven

Windamere Horse Haven Equine sanctuary for neglected, abandoned & abused horses. WINDAMERE HORSE HAVEN Association Inc is a horse rescue charity which was established in 2013.

Its aim is to help save abused, neglected and abandoned horses and to try and give them a second chance at life through rehabilitation and re-education in a caring environment, with a view to rehoming to a forever home. As part of their rehabilitation and care, Windamere horses are provided with individualised supplementary feeding, and farrier, dental and routine vet care and also equine massage/

bodywork as needed. Once we have helped a horse recover to full health and it has undergone a retraining program with our horse trainer, we will try and find a suitable adoptive home. We attempt to match horse and prospective owners and offer ongoing support. Windamere Horse Haven is mainly funded by donations or ongoing sponsorship which can be for as little as $10 per week. Individual donations/sponsorship as well as those from businesses are very much appreciated. Even having a donation box on a sales counter can help fund the horses in our care. Sponsors will receive a letter of introduction to Windamere as well as regular periodic newsletters. Donations and sponsorship over $2.00 is tax deductable. If you would like to donate/sponsor or have a donation box on your sales counter, would like to know more, or want to download a sponsorship form please visit our website www.windamerehorsehaven.com , or email us at [email protected]

It’s Spring. There’s something in the air!

Unfortunately whatever that something is got into Sophies eye and she has a painful corneal ulcer.

Her foster carer noticed her eye was sore and closed yesterday evening. We went over to take a look but couldn’t locate anything in the eye, but noted the cloudiness.

First thing this morning she saw Dr Anna from Equus Veterinary Services for an eye check, dye and assessment. Eyes are always an urgent thing to attend to.

She will need eye cream four times a day for the next week, which will hopefully help the eye to heal.

Willow update!

Her eye removal surgery went well. She has now come home from Equus Veterinary Services and is with us in a large yard where she will complete her recovery and quarantine.

The cancer tumor was removed and a small piece of her upper eyelid also had some cancer removed. We are hopeful that it is all gone and she will make a full recovery.

She is a very friendly sweet mare and she sends her deepest appreciation to everyone who has donated to her surgery bill.

On Sunday night we were contacted by a member of the public about an abandoned horse in need. She had been left to wander country roads and was a hazard to traffic. She got her to safety and after no owner was located to take her back, asked for our help.

Today we drove north to collect her and bring her into our care. We have named her Willow. She is an early to mid teens Appaloosa mare.

We were told she had an eye injury - eyes in horses are a delicate thing, so we had her booked to go direct to Equus Veterinary Services this afternoon after collection.

Sadly the eye is worse than expected and is severely damaged with a cancer tumor and weeping, so needs to be removed ASAP as it is a painful condition.

She is booked to have the surgery tomorrow - can you help with the costs of her care? We expect this to cost between $1200 and $1500 with post surgery care and medications.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Today we took delivery of our new mini float.

As we already have a huge float to accommodate huge horses, we felt we also needed a tiny float to fit tiny horses. Because, you know, you can never have too many tiny horses!
