Dr Kellie Adamson has been in Queensland attending the Beyond the Basics in Mare Reproduction workshop at WestVETS 🐴🩺

The workshop provided plenty of practical, hands-on experience with advanced mare reproduction techniques, as well as the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in reproductive diagnostics, breeding management and treatment.

With breeding season just around the corner, Kellie is excited to bring these skills and new ideas back to Equus and put them into practice for our clients and their mares. 🐎🌱

🦷 Seeing what the eye can’t! 🐴

Join Dr Dan and his assistant Jaffa as they demonstrate one of the important tools we use at Equus Vets — our dental oroscope.

The oroscope provides high-definition images from inside the horse’s mouth, allowing us to examine the teeth and surrounding structures in much greater detail. This helps us identify subtle pathology that may otherwise be missed, giving us the opportunity to address problems before they progress into more serious dental disease.

It’s also an invaluable tool in our advanced dental and surgical cases, providing enhanced visualisation to assist with diagnosis, treatment planning and procedures.

A thorough dental examination is about much more than just finding sharp points — early detection can make a significant difference to your horse’s long-term oral health and comfort.

🧛 Ah… a vampire?! 🦷

Not really — but those teeth are almost as scary!

Dr Kellie recently saw this two-year-old c**t for his very first dental, and despite his young age, there was already plenty going on.

His dental examination revealed:
🦷 Large, extremely sharp rostral hooks
🦷 Sharp wolf teeth
🦷 Sharp enamel points
🦷 Painful cheek ulcers caused by those sharp points

Young horses’ mouths change rapidly as their adult teeth erupt and their baby teeth are shed. Their teeth are also relatively soft, so sharp points and other dental problems can develop quickly — often without obvious signs.

🐴 We recommend a horse’s first dental examination at around 12 months of age, then every 6 months until they have their full adult mouth at around 5 years of age.

Regular dental checks during these formative years allow us to identify and manage problems early, helping keep your young horse comfortable as they grow and begin their education.

Prevention is better than cure. 🐴💙
