Expecting a foal? 🐴 Put the important dates in your diary.

Our foaling calculator helps you plan ahead. Simply enter your mare’s breeding date to calculate:

✔️ Her estimated foaling date
✔️ Pre-foaling tetanus vaccination timing
✔️ A worming reminder

If you know your mare’s previous gestation length, you can adjust the calculator to suit her.

Of course, mares don’t always follow the calendar, so treat the due date as a guide!

Did they get enough colostrum? 🐴🍼

Your foal can be bright, nursing and look completely healthy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve received enough antibodies.

Foals are born with very little antibody protection of their own. They rely on colostrum, the mare’s first milk, to provide the antibodies they need to protect them from infection during those critical early weeks of life.
The key antibody we measure is IgG (immunoglobulin G).

⏱️ Timing matters. A foal’s ability to absorb these antibodies is highest immediately after birth and declines rapidly over the following hours. By around 24 hours, very little additional IgG can be absorbed from the intestine.
If a foal doesn’t receive or absorb enough colostrum, this is called failure of passive transfer, leaving them at increased risk of serious infection.

🧪 Fortunately, we can check.
A simple blood test measures your foal’s IgG level and tells us whether they’ve received adequate immunity.

As a general guide:
🟢 >800 mg/dL – adequate passive transfer
🟠 400–800 mg/dL – partial failure of passive transfer
🔴

Dr Brad has just confirmed our first pregnancy of the 2026 breeding season! 💕

There’s always something exciting about seeing that little black dot on the ultrasound screen.

Early pregnancy scanning allows us to confirm pregnancy and, importantly, check for twins while they can still be managed effectively.

A great start to the season, here’s to many more positive scans to come! 🩺🐴
