I am now offering foetal counting as part of my ewe pregnancy scanning service, for those of you who are interested. I am still not claiming accuracy on this because it takes lots of practice so I am willing to do ir for my regular pregnant/not detectably pregnant rate, just until I feel more confident and am more accurate.
I use a ovi-scan 6 which is about the duck's nuts for this job.
The screen shot shows an example of a fertile merino flock - as you can see there is a potential for a high lambing percentage! Since most lamb deaths occur within 3 days of lambing and this is massively dependent on ewe body condition and nutrition and mob size, identification of these twinners is bloody important. Millions of lambs are lost every year in Australia - we can do so much better!
