Moruya Animal Hospital

Moruya Animal Hospital Please note that direct messages through Facebook are not monitored. The hospital was founded by local veterinarian Dr Kerry Jackson in February 2014.

If you have any questions or concerns about your furry friends, please call the Animal Hospital on 02 4474 0077 Moruya Animal Hospital is a new purpose built veterinary hospital designed, equipped and staffed to provide the highest quality service to clients and a corresponding level of care to patients. Kerry, has been a qualified veterinarian since 1988 and has spent most of her career working i

n a range of animal hospitals in Australia and overseas. Kerry gained her initial post-graduation veterinary experience at Batemans Bay, Moruya, and Braidwood and returned to Moruya to live and work in 2002. Since that time Kerry has built a reputation for competence and integrity amongst clients and recognition of genuine compassion for her patients. In late 2013, Kerry decided that it was time to pursue her dream of opening her own practice with the primary aim of meeting the needs of her many existing clients whilst offering a service to further her special interest in small animal medicine and surgery. Moruya Animal Hospital opened in February 2014 and is the culmination of that dream. Whilst a relatively small practice (and deliberately so), it is fully equipped and designed with your pet’s wellbeing in mind. Moruya Animal Hospital is well stocked to provide complete care for small animals. We stock an extensive range of veterinary health care products, including the highly recommended Royal Canin range of specialist foods for your best friend, be it cat or dog.

🔥 Heatstroke warning 🔥

Rising temperatures and longer days during summer lead to pets being out and about. When a pet’s body temperature rises through activity, they release excess body heat through panting and their paws. Unfortunately, in high environmental temperatures, the pet cannot easily lower their body temperature and heatstroke can develop. It is estimated that over 70% of heatstroke cases are caused by over-exertion e.g. just been playing, exercising, or running in the heat. The key to beating the heat is prevention!

☀️How we recommend to prevent heat stroke
- NEVER exercise your pets in the warmest parts of the day,
- Ensure that your pet always has access to clean fresh water
- Ensure they always have access to shade or inside under the AC 😎
- NEVER leave your dog in the car

☀️ Signs of heat stroke
- Excessive panting
- Agitation
- Bright pink gums and tongue
- Lethargy
- Seizure
- Collapse

If you are concerned your pets may have heat stroke, please move your pet to a cool area it is best under an AC and then call us immediately on 02 4474 0077

‼️We are currently treating a very small dog with severe tick paralysis. These three lively ticks were all found around her head and neck. PLEASE ensure your pet's tick prevention is up to date, given according to the dosing instructions and weight range, and use a reputable product.

This little dog was on a spot-on treatment which has a reduced efficacy in high tick areas like the South Coast, as well as a shorter working period. We recommend Bravecto chews and the annual Quantum injection. Please give the clinic a call if you have any questions or concerns about your pet's current tick prevention ‼️

Caution to dog walkers on South Head Beach! We treated a dog on Tuesday morning for a confirmed ingestion of amphetamines and ma*****na, which he found on the beach at South Head, Moruya. He has since recovered well after intravenous fluids, activated charcoal and careful observation in hospital.

The signs of toxin ingestion are ataxia (unsteady mobility), vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling and collapse.

Warning to dog owners on the South Coast. More Leptospirosis cases confirmed in nearby areas. The disease is usually transmitted by contact with rat urine and contaminated water sources. It is a very serious disease with a high mortality rate. Humans can catch this disease. We recommend the new MSD Leptospirosis vaccine that covers both the major serovars.

Four dogs have died from canine leptospirosis, with two confirmed in the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven.

The serious bacterial disease is spread by rats and contaminated water and can cause liver and kidney failure.

Some of the symptoms include vomiting or diarrhea and lethargy.

Dog owners in the Southern Highlands and South coast are being urged to have their pets vaccinated and to avoid letting them drink or swim in stagnant water.

Ticks are still around. This tick was responsible for the death of a beautiful young dog on Saturday. Not the owners fault, they had only had the dog a short time and was assured that he had tick treatment on board. He didn't, and we found this tick on his ribcage. Despite intensive treatment he still died. Very distressing for everyone involved. Please make sure your pets tick prevention is up to date. There is no tick season anymore - they are found all year round.
