Bovine Colostrum: Why Is It Gaining So Much Attention?

Bovine colostrum is gaining traction in the animal health world, and it's not just horse owners who are taking notice.

More and more dog owners are adding bovine colostrum to their dogs' diets, and some veterinarians are now recommending it as part of a broader nutritional approach to support overall wellbeing. Dog owners commonly use bovine colostrum to support:

✔ Gut and digestive health
✔ Normal immune function
✔ Healthy skin and coat condition
✔ Recovery during times of increased physical demand
✔ General health and wellbeing

Horse owners are also beginning to discover the benefits of incorporating bovine colostrum into their feeding programs. While every horse is different, many owners choose to feed bovine colostrum to support:

✔ Digestive and gut health
✔ Nutrient utilisation from the diet
✔ Normal immune function
✔ Horses experiencing seasonal or environmental challenges
✔ Horses in training, competition, travel, or recovery periods

As a naturally nutrient-dense whole food, bovine colostrum contains naturally occurring immunoglobulins (IgGs), proteins, vitamins, minerals, and growth factors, making it a popular addition to a balanced feeding program across a range of animal species.

With interest continuing to grow among both dog and horse owners, it's easy to see why bovine colostrum has become one of the most talked-about supplements in recent years.

Now available at Mandalong Stockfeeds.

Not all hay is created equal 🌾🐴

Different hay types can vary massively in protein, energy and fibre — and the “best” option really depends on the individual horse.

Here’s a simple breakdown of some common hay varieties we stock and where they may fit into a feeding program 👇

🌿 First Grade Lucerne
Typically leafy, softer and higher in protein and energy than grass hays. Often used for:
✔️ hard keepers
✔️ performance horses
✔️ growing horses
✔️ supporting weight gain and topline

Lucerne naturally contains quality protein, digestible fibre and higher calcium levels.

Despite popular belief, lucerne is not typically considered one of the highest sugar hays. In many cases, some grass hays cut at certain stages can actually contain higher sugar levels. Lucerne’s reputation for making horses “hot” is often more related to the additional calories and quality nutrition it provides rather than sugar content itself.

🌿 Second Grade Lucerne
Usually contains a bit more stem and slightly less leaf than first grade lucerne, making it a little lower in energy and protein overall.

Can still be a fantastic option for:
✔️ maintaining condition
✔️ mixing with grass hay
✔️ horses needing some added quality fibre without the richness of premium lucerne

🌾 Rhodes Grass Hay
A softer grass hay often chosen for:
✔️ good doers
✔️ horses needing lower calorie forage
✔️ horses requiring a more moderate energy intake

Rhodes can work well as part of a balanced, fibre-based diet and is often appreciated for its softer texture compared to some coarser grass hays.

🌾 Teff Hay
Teff has become increasingly popular for:
✔️ easy keepers
✔️ metabolic horses
✔️ horses requiring lower sugar/starch diets

Typically a fine, soft grass hay that can suit horses needing carefully managed calorie intake while still supporting fibre intake and gut health.

🌾 Oaten Hay
Generally very palatable and commonly fed across many types of horses. Nutritional value can vary a lot depending on when it was cut.

Can be suitable for:
✔️ maintaining condition
✔️ encouraging forage intake
✔️ adding variety to forage sources

Earlier cut oaten hay that still contains more grain can be higher in energy than later cut varieties.

🌾 Straw
Straw is very low in nutritional value compared to hay and is usually used more for:
✔️ bedding
✔️ adding bulk fibre in specific diets
✔️ slowing intake in some good doers

It’s important that straw is introduced carefully and fed appropriately, as it isn’t suitable as the sole forage source for most horses.

At the end of the day, the “best” hay depends on:
🐴 the horse
🐴 workload
🐴 body condition
🐴 pasture access
🐴 overall diet balance

And even within the same hay type, quality can vary from one batch to the next.

If you’re unsure what forage best suits your horse this winter, feel free to chat with us in store ❄️

One of the biggest things we see during winter is horses quietly starting to lose condition as pasture quality and availability begin to drop off.

And often, the first adjustment that needs to happen isn’t adding more hard feed — it’s increasing forage intake. 🐴🌾

As grass declines, horses rely more heavily on hay to meet their energy requirements and maintain gut health. Fibre fermentation in the hindgut actually helps produce warmth, which is why adequate forage becomes even more important during the colder months.

For some horses — particularly older horses, Thoroughbreds, hard keepers, or those in regular work — winter may also be the time to reassess:
• overall calorie intake
• protein quality
• access to consistent forage
• vitamin and mineral balance

One nutrient that can commonly become lower during winter is Vitamin E. Fresh green pasture is the main natural source of Vitamin E in the equine diet, and once horses move onto predominantly hay-based diets, intake can reduce significantly.

Vitamin E plays an important role in:
✔️ muscle health and recovery
✔️ immune support
✔️ antioxidant protection
✔️ nervous system function

Depending on the individual horse and diet, this can sometimes be supported through carefully selected feeds or supplementation where needed.

Some options we often recommend or discuss in winter feeding programs can include:
🌾 higher fibre feeds
🌾 lucerne-based products
🌾 quality protein sources
🌾 oils for additional calories
🌾 Vitamin E support products where appropriate

Every horse is different, and winter feeding doesn’t always mean feeding “more” — sometimes it’s simply feeding smarter.

If you’re unsure whether your horse’s current diet is meeting their needs heading into winter, feel free to chat with us in store about feed options and nutrition support. ❄️

🐔 WINTER LAYING TIPS FOR BACKYARD CHICKENS ❄️🥚

Noticing fewer eggs lately? Don’t panic — it’s very common for laying rates to drop during winter. Shorter daylight hours and colder weather naturally slow production, but a few simple management tips can help support your flock through the colder months.

Here are a few things we recommend:

🥚 Feed a quality layer feed
Your hens need consistent energy, protein, calcium, and nutrients to maintain condition and support egg production during winter.

🥚 Don’t rely on scratch mixes alone
Scratch grains are great as a treat, but they shouldn’t replace a balanced layer feed — especially in colder weather when nutritional demands increase.

🥚 Keep fresh water available
Cold mornings can reduce water intake, but hydration still plays a huge role in laying and overall health.

🥚 Extra protein can help
During winter, moulting, or periods of reduced laying, adding some additional protein sources can help support feather condition and bodyweight.

🥚 Keep the coop dry and clean
Cold + damp conditions can create stress and increase health issues in backyard flocks.

At Mandalong Stockfeeds we stock a range of poultry feeds to suit backyard chickens, including quality layer pellets, mash, and grain options to help keep your flock happy this winter 🐓

Winter can be tough on hooves. Mud, constant moisture, wet paddocks and standing in damp conditions can quickly lead to soft, smelly frogs, crumbly white lines and feet that just aren’t coping as well as they should.

One product I really like having on hand this time of year is Kevin Bacon’s Hoof Solution👌

This is a natural hoof dressing designed to help maintain the soles and frogs of the hoof in both shod and unshod horses. I especially like it for horses dealing with:

• Sensitive frogs
• Damp or smelly feet
• Chalky or crumbly white line areas
• Wet winter paddocks and muddy conditions

It’s also commonly used before applying pads or silicone packing.

Winter hoof care is about more than just picking feet out occasionally. Keeping hooves as clean and dry as possible, staying on top of trims, feeding a balanced diet, and supporting hoof health early can make a huge difference heading into the wetter months.

If your horse’s feet are starting to struggle this winter, pop in and chat with us at Mandalong Stockfeeds
— we’re always happy to help point you in the right direction 🐴
