JCUVet has recently seen a surge in Parvovirus patients in Townsville.
To help increase awareness, here are some facts surrounding the disease.
What is Parvovirus?
🦠Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that was first identified in 1976 in Europe and by 1978 has spread throughout the world. CPV remains a worldwide issue affecting puppies, dogs and wild carnivores with severe disease.
🦠The virus predominantly attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract, but can occasionally in puppies can cause damage to the muscles in the heart.
🦠There are multiple strains of CPV and these viruses are closely related to feline panleukopenia virus that affects cats. CPV-2a andCPV2b are the most common strains causing disease worldwide.
🦠The virus is resistant to most household cleaners, extreme heat, cold, drying and humidity. Making them very hardy viruses, able to survive in the environment for up to 7 months.
How is Parvovirus spread?
🦠The virus can be spread through direct dog-to-dog contact, contact with infected faeces, contaminated environments or people.
🦠The virus is able to contaminated most surfaces it comes into contact with such as kennel floors, water bowls, food, leashes and even people handling infected animals.
🦠The virus is carried from location to location by infected animals, the movement of contaminated belongings or people and on the fur of contaminated animals including feral dogs, cats and dingoes.
🦠Dogs and puppies successfully treated for parvo can continue to shed the virus for up to 2 weeks following recovery.
🦠Quarantine and good hygiene is paramount to preventing the spread of parvo.
