TRAINING TUESDAY
Many reactive dogs are responding to overstimulation or perceived threat. A mat behaviour gives them a clear, trained option that reduces their need to react. It also helps generalise calmness and can be paired with triggers to change emotional responses over time.
Fearful or reactive dogs often feel they have no safe place to retreat when life gets overwhelming. Teaching a calm mat behaviour helps create that sense of security.
Start by rewarding any interaction with the mat:looking at it, sniffing it, stepping on it. Gradually build towards relaxed lying down. Practise in quiet places first, and keep sessions short.
The mat becomes more than just a training prop. Itβs a signal to your dog that they can rest, observe, and breathe. That predictability supports calmer choices when things feel scary or unpredictable.
