🐶👂 EAR INFECTIONS IN DOGS – WHAT EVERY PET OWNER SHOULD KNOW! 🐾
Have you noticed your dog scratching their ears more than usual, shaking their head, or having an unpleasant smell coming from their ears? These could be signs of an ear infection! 🦠
Ear infections are common in dogs and can be uncomfortable and painful if left untreated.

👂 Frequent head shaking or ear scratching
🔴 Redness or swelling inside the ear
👃 An unpleasant smell coming from the ears
🟤 Brown, yellow or dark discharge
😣 Pain or sensitivity when touching the ears
🐕 Tilting their head or holding one ear differently
🦠 What causes ear infections?
Ear infections can be caused by bacteria, yeast, ear mites, allergies, moisture trapped in the ears, or underlying skin conditions. Dogs with floppy ears or hairy ear canals may also be more prone to ear problems, like Maggie shown here who recently had an ear infection. Her pigtails are not only functional for keeping hair out of her eyes it also keeps the hair off her ears and bonus points it’s absolutely adorable 🥰
💡 How can you help prevent ear infections?
✅ Check your dog’s ears regularly for redness, discharge or odour.
✅ Keep ears dry after swimming or bathing.
✅ Use only vet-recommended ear cleaners.
✅ Address underlying allergies or skin problems.
✅ Seek veterinary advice if symptoms develop or keep returning.
⚠️ Important: Never put cotton buds, vinegar, peroxide or unprescribed ear drops into your dog’s ears. Some treatments can cause further irritation or harm if the eardrum is damaged.
🐾 When should you contact your vet?
If your dog is showing signs of an ear infection, arrange a veterinary examination. The sooner the cause is identified and treated, the sooner your furry friend can feel comfortable again!
🚨 Seek urgent veterinary care if your dog has severe ear pain, a head tilt, loss of balance or sudden hearing changes.
