The classic question:
" Do they Shed?"
They sure do.
This is a little more dramatic as Anarchy lost all her coat after puppies (very normal). She wasn't fit to be seen in public ๐Ÿคฃ but she could still run in sports. So we entered a Sprint Dog Trial. There is only a bag to chase and she didn't quite get the idea at first but 4 trials later she's actually sprinting for the finish.

Winter had also lost all her coat from her phantom pregnancy so she was also running naked. Her coat is way more dense than Anarchy's but stays relatively short so the transition doesn't look as dramatic but when you're grooming her you can sure tell.

At first I had little interest in those April photos. I mean they looked so naked!
But later, i found it amusing and hunted through the photos to find 2 in virtually the same pose. But 4.5 months apart in time.
Anarchy on 6 April and 23 August.

Winters photos were 6 April and 8 June. She didn't run in the August and September trials.

You guys remember Muffin?

Well, Muffin had a scary encounter a few months back with a Paralysis Tick ๐Ÿ˜ฐ.

Fortunately her owners noticed she wasn't well. The vet immediately suspected the paralysis tick (despite being winter in central Victoria) and quickly found the culprits.
How did they find the culprit under all the puppy fluff? Yep, she got shaved down.

It's growing back now and I just received these photos from her family.

They say "She is the most adorable, affectionate, hilarious, courageous, outgoing girl". She's so well loved and I'm so relieved she survived the ticks and we still get to see her gorgeous face.

Edited to add: we think she picked them up the week before on a visit to the coast.

Anarchy is my superstar and I Love her Madly. She's just earnt 2 titles๐Ÿ˜ƒ a week apart. After an epic 10 month break from the showring, raising a litter, losing all her coat, growing it back and having a season and phantom where she held onto waterweight like a camel ๐Ÿ™„. She's already showing signs of dropping her new coat. Damn showing the girls can be hard.

Last weekend we jetted to Brisbane for the 'Advance Pacific International' shows.

A2O Ch. Au Ch.
Caleebra Summer Sweetheart (AI) had a cracking weekend, awarded
4/5 Best of Breeds and shortlisted twice for Best in Group.
This included an Asia, Africa and Oceania Championship show as well as the International FCI Championship Show.

The win at the FCI show gave her the last 'Certificate of Aptitude for the International Championship of Beauty' she needed to be awarded the International Beauty Champion title. This one is abbreviated CIB and goes at the front of her name.

The same time this weekend just gone she was sprinting down the 100m stretch to earn her Novice Sprint Dog Title.
This girl can do anything she sets her mind to.
Love her Madly.

Many thanks to my village, without you I wouldn't be where I am with myself and my girls living their best lives.

Winter and Autumn went back to school!
Autumnโ€™s humum had a dog training session today. Demo dogs were needed so Winter and Autumn were more than happy to step up and help!
They assisted with teaching touch, wait, leave it, โ€œplay deadโ€, weaves and back up.
Of course the whole class fell in love with the two of them, with the training manager wanting to take Winter home ๐Ÿ˜‚
So proud of these girls, Winter has been away from home and staying with Autumn for over a week now and is just so eager to work with anyone (provided they have food) โค๏ธ

Itโ€™s been a busy week at Caleebra HQ and it isnโ€™t slowing down yet!
This Saturday the 27th September weโ€™ll be at KCC for another Sprint Dog Trial. All going well, Anarchy should earn enough points to get her second title in a week!

I sometimes get asked why dogs are gaining or unable to gain weight on a fresh food diet.
Dr Conor Brady to the rescue with a far better explanation than I could muster.

It is one of the many reasons I recommend variety. Across proteins, Across brands, Across preparation (cooked, commercial, home made, air dried, freeze dried).

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1WjTt2Zzhq/

Why is my dog losing weight on turkey raw dog food?

Because some recipes are too lean (for some types).

Most companies are not analysing their protein/fat contents in any real way. Those tests are pricey and not required by the authorities.

Like the dry food companies, they are using diet formulators like mine to estimate the nutritional content of their products (as did I when I made raw, not pointing fingers here, needs must) and pop that on the label. That's good enough for the vets who are only really concerned for hazardous bacterial content.

However, most of us now know some can take liberty with what they decide to write on that label.

Eg - is your dog crapping bullets after his rabbit meal? !

That's a common one and it's because there's too much bone in there. No way it's 10% bone. Rabbit meat is expensive, the carcass is not.

In other cases, mixes like beef and duck are notoriously fatty. The fattier the beef mince in the shops the cheaper it is as fat is cheaper than muscle.

In the case of duck parts, the cheapest cut you can buy is carcass, which is hella fatty. They try thin this out with necks which are largely bone and you get this paley pinky mix that looks nothing like deep, dark duck meat....because it isn't. The key to it, when I was manufacturing, was adding duck hearts, some liver and maybe some giblets (if you can find some cleaned). That was great meat but as so many are now making raw, there isn't the hearts to go around. There is no other meat on a duck to work with (that they can afford).

Nobody wants to read 20g fat, 10g of protein on the label so there is a tendency of some of the cheaper brands to claim figures approximating 50:50 protein to fat, but a little experience can tell you from 10m away that it's far, far fattier than that.

Fatty raw has a number of issues. Yes your dog will balloon out in weight but also, less discussed, is that most of the actual nutrition - all the minerals, amino acids, antioxidants etc - are in the red muscle bit. The less of that you get the more deficient the diet becomes nutritionally, over time.

But on the flip side, some raws are too lean. I'm looking at you turkey mixes. Many turkey mixes are made on turkey necks. Reason being, a lot of turkey is flown in from Italy or Poland. Folk don't fly in carcasses (or wings really), that goes to the dry pet food factories so they can put images of roasting turkey breast meat on their labels.

Granted there are some turkey farms in the UK but turkey carcass is pretty hard stuff, for a bird, so you need meat to meaty it up a bit. As we mentioned, when it comes to birds, you think hearts and giblets but again, demand is such that those other bits are hard to find (you need LOTS of hearts per 1 turkey neck....) and inevitably, prices soar.

So there's a good chance some turkey raw dog foods are largely ground-up turkey necks. Still GREAT food for a dog, but a touch boney and, as all poultry necks are de-skinned, a very lean cut of meat.

I like a lean raw dog food myself. I know they evolved on lean animals, not this fatty 1:1 fat-to-protein birds we're putting out (a symptom of high-grain diets and no exercise). Those animals would be cheeseburgers in the wild. Wild animals run for a living, literally. Bar babies, most of them start around 4 parts protein to 1 part fat and get far leaner from there.

But I just finished with a client whose ACTIVE dogs were losing weight on turkey complete. She was feeding quite a lot for the size of them. Waste of money. We upped the fat content with some cheap fatty beef mince and boom, overnight, the weight loss stopped, saving her a fortune and the dog from losing any more muscle mass (while they were clearly getting enough protein, the body needed more energy, so it raids the body for first fat and then muscle protein to fuel it).

Everything in proportion.

"Chase, who is currently mid-board and train with us, is learning so many valuable life skills. In spending time working with him it has given me greater perspective on the important journey we have when raising our puppies and dogs to become fine canine citizens, just like this guy.

Whilst I was working through some training drills and proofing Chase's obedience around high levels of distractions it became very apparent to me that my training goals for him seemed very confusing to many of the people around us on our public outing.

With many of the the people we passed wanting to stop us and pat him, and then those who had excitable dogs wanting theirs to say "Hi", it was quite a challenge to achieve our training goals. My always polite and professional reply of "No, I'm sorry, he's currently in training" seemed to both upset and in some cases almost offend others who wanted to engage with Chase.

The truth is that many of these people assumed my decline to their desire to pat or let their dog come up to Chase was because he is anti-social or aggressive. Chase most certainly isn't either of these things; he's a dear boy with lovely manners and quite the cuddle pot.

So why would I say "No" to people wanting to pat him and or other dogs wanting to meet him?
Because that's actually not what "Socialisation" and socialising our dogs is; what people often don't understand is that these types of interactions can do more harm than good.

Socialisation is something that occurs during phases of development, with the most critical phase being between 4 and 14 weeks. There are other stages of mental and social development that follow but this period is the really important one and if it's missed so too are some of the jigsaw puzzle pieces.

So if my goal of having Chase in public isn't to socialise him then what is it?

It's called "Neutralise" - I want Chase to be neutral to any and all stimulus in every and any environment. I want him to be an attentive and willing participant in the activities we share together. I want him to see people and other dogs as being of less value to him than me, like furniture in a room. This very point is something many dog owners misunderstand and/or fail to consider; issues can be created accidentally through improper socialisation.

You see, if we let every person or dog say "hi", we risk creating a magnitude of behavioural issues. Leash pulling towards other dogs and people being the most common behaviour I see professionally, this behaviour can escalate to on-leash frustration, agitation and then quickly progress to aggression. Many fear-based behaviours are the direct result of negative associations created when our dogs have excessive pressure placed on them, instead of systematic desensitisation. The pressure it places on our dogs when we either thrust socialisation upon them or have it pushed into them is a very common link to so many social and emotional issues I see for dogs requiring behaviour modification.

The real goal is to be out there, in the scene whilst not making a scene. Take a moment to reflect on what you are trying create in your dog's public behaviour and then ask yourself are you sabotaging your own desired outcome?

We are setting Chase up for success and apologise to anyone that may have been upset or offended: it's not personal, it's just not about you and your needs."
