These pictures are not for the faint hearted! On a routine 6 monthly check up we found these lesions all over the tongue that were not present at the previous visit! This horse was spelling and was showing no outward behavioural signs to suggest she was in any discomfort (eating normally, maintaining weight etc). We suspect it was caused by migrating bot-fly larvae, which were irritating the mare, causing her to chew on her tongue. This was the first year the owner had not removed the bot-fly eggs from the coat. Goes to show what can change in a small period of time and how little some horses express discomfort! We expect the tongue to heal naturally over the coming months but will re-check her to ensure so!

I am back from a well-earned break, but playing a little catch up! Please be mindful there may be wait times before I can see your horse! August is almost full with limited spots available (pending location) and travel days are already being set for September. If you are after a particular day of the week or have multiple horses needing dentals I recommend booking 1-2 months in advance. Thanking you all for your patience while I try and respond to everyone’s enquiries!

Our June appointments are now full! I will be taking annual leave from 2nd-27th July, if your horse is due for their annual check up please touch base to ensure I can see them in a timely manner. Currently taking bookings for late July and early August!

It has been a while since we had a heaviest horse update! A couple of weeks ago I saw this gentle giant, Winston, who is an 18.1 h Warmblood, and only 5 years old! He clocked in at 706kg.

This weeks surgical case was an older thoroughbred gelding who was diagnosed with EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis). This disease is often seen in the incisors of older horses and is extremely painful!

Clinical symptoms vary across horses, but some include: unable to bite through carrots, reduced grazing on short pastures, weight loss, increased mouth sensitivity, mobile or infected looking teeth, reduced tolerance of speculum pressure during routine dentals, head tossing/shaking.

Surgical extraction is advised as these teeth are painful! The roots will begin to resorb and can fracture, and create pockets/tracts for infection, in some cases (not this one) you will also see hypercementosis (increased deposits of cementum, the outer surface of the tooth, creating bulbous-like enlargement of tooth roots).

A great example of what can go wrong if your horse doesn’t receive appropriate regular dental care! This horse had teeth removed from the lower arcade many years ago. Unfortunately, the opposing teeth were not regular reduced during subsequent routine visits. The result? Overgrown or ‘tall’ teeth! These teeth were reducing normal jaw function and causing trauma to the gum on the lower arcade. This can be improved with regular dentals, slowly reducing the height of the teeth each time.

Did you know Donkeys also require regular dentals? They have similar teeth to horses and can get the same dental diseases! I got the pleasure meeting Monty & Zulyah a few weeks ago!
