Mitchelton Veterinary Practice

Mitchelton Veterinary Practice Mitchelton Veterinary Practice is a small animal practice operating under the Vetwell group. Mitchelton joined the Vetwell group in 2002.

As the first certified Veterinary Hospital in Brisbane, the very retro Mitchelton Veterinary Practice still retains its charm as a 70s-style concrete block vet facility. The practice was established by brothers Dion and Jim Danalis in 1971. Dion and Jim (who spent the late 60s working on a PhD with Professor Dowling at UQ) set up shop in Sizer Street in Everton Park at a time when there was no pra

ctice to the west of them (today there is one in every suburb). In 1972 they relocated to Blackwood St, and later moved across the road to our current hospital site in 1973. In the early days the Mitchelton vets might examine a calving cow, a pig with diarrhoea or a slow racehorse. From the beginning, specialists have practiced here (such as the late Dr Saul Goldfarb, the father of Australian Veterinary Ophthalmology). With a resident specialist on-staff, that trend continues to this day. Since then, there has been a substantial upgrade and renovation of the surgery suite, anaesthesia room, hospital areas, and veterinary equipment. The improvements for human comfort—the reception area, consulting rooms and building exterior—were completed in 2006

Tick Season Is Well and Truly Here!

Paralysis ticks are out in force and they can be life threatening. These tiny parasites can cause serious illness and sadly even death if not found and treated early. We have treated multiple patients over the past week.

Watch to watch for:
-Wobby or weak back legs
-Trouble breathing or swallowing
-Vomiting, gagging or drooling
-Change in bark or meow

If you notice any of these signs, please seek veterinary help immediately. Tick paralysis can progress very quickly, even once the tick has been removed.

Prevention is the best protection:

-Use a reliable tick prevention all year round. Bravecto/Nexgard Spectra/Felpreva are just a few examples
-Check your pet daily (especially around the head, neck and shoulders)
-Keep grass short and avoid bushy areas where ticks thrive

If you’re unsure which tick prevention is best for your pet, please give us a call 🐶

Microchip Pet Registry company, HomeSafeID, will soon cease to operate online.

This means if you know your pet is registered with HomeSafeID, you will need to change your microchip registration to another company.

If your pet's registration isn't updated, should they go missing or are found, vets/councils/animal shelters will no longer be able to view your pet’s ownership details listed on their microchip when it is scanned, making it difficult to reunite you!

To find out where your pets microchip details are registered, you can go to www.petaddress.com.au

If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number or have lost their paperwork with their registration details, we can scan your pet and provide their microchip number.

You can go online to register to one of these databases. A small fee may apply with some databases.
