A community effort to save this poor pelican. Our wonderful wildlife carer made several trips and attempts to catch this pelican and then called on Dr Caitlin to assist. After some sedation, attempts were made to cut the massive hook. Our manual bolt cutters and brute strength of part time kennel hand Michael could not cut the hook. Dr Carrie was called for back up and discussions led us to the local hospital. Enter Dion with the ring cutter from the hospital. We were able to remove the barb and still with some difficulty extract the hook.
At a time when we face an imminent viral threat to our wildlife with bird flu, it's rewarding to help wildlife when we can.
Thanks again to Dion, a legend !

It's so important to keep an eye on our puppies teeth development! This little dude's mum noticed a problem and brought him to see Dr Helen who has set him on the right path for a comfortable smile. We are now offering free dental checks with our qualified nurses at 6 months of age, so that we can intervene if necessary, before it's too late! We used to check these babies teeth at desexing, but with the move towards delayed desexing, we don't want to miss an opportunity to help!

In the last few weeks, our team has saved two critically ill working dogs from rural properties who have accessed ratsac. Rodenticides are toxins that affect the dog's ability to clot their blood. When they ingest these toxins they can look fine but then can crash if they have a bleed into their chest or abdomen. Dr Kai and vet tech Helena were in charge of the first critical case and intensive care involved draining the chest, autotransfusion, plasma transfusion and vitamin K treatment. The next case was cared for by Dr Alanna and nurse Brit. This case also required intensive monitoring and life saving plasma transfusion and vitamin K treatment.
Both dogs were incredibly fortunate to survive. Rural dogs often access these toxins from under sheds or buildings. Rats can move the wax blocks around or knock them off shelfs.
I'm very proud of the team all working together to save these beautiful dogs

THE FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿพ
This young pup presented Friday afternoon after a history of vomiting after eating. Dr Carrie assessed the young dog who seemed very quiet and lethargic for a pup. A foreign body was palpated in the abdomen and xrays confirmed our suspicions. It was then all hands on deck with nurse Britt staying late to help, and Dr Matt and Dr Carrie performing the surgery. A hollow rubber piece of chew toy was located and removed from the intestine. Our friend is now doing very well and back to his bouncy self.

Ticks are still around, we have treated two animals in the last few days. Wet weather and warmer days mean ticks are still a problem. Many people are taking advantage of the yearly Bravecto injection, so ask us today about 12 month cover in one easy visit. Alternatively, just use your regular product ..even through the winter months.
