Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can result in heat stress, heatstroke and problems such as dehydration, muscle spasms and colic. Signs of heat stress are in horses are:

* Re**al temperatures above 39 C.
* Increased heart rate.
* Increased breathing rate.
* Profuse sweating.
* Droopy ears.
* Tiredness.
* Dehydration.
* Skin tent lasting several seconds after pinching the skin of the neck or shoulders.
* Reduced feed intake

Our horses are already sweating, be mindful if you rug, the sweat helps cool them down with airflow, having a rug on restricts airflow.

Wet your feeds, add electrolytes if you can, keep replenishing their water over the day to keep it cool and prevent colic.

If you do have signs of colic, don’t hesitate to call.
