The Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association Australia held their Annual General meeting on Friday 21 February.

Congratulations to Brock Smith on being elected as the CSDAA President for 2025.

With nearly two decades of experience in the concrete sawing and drilling industry, Brock is the General Manager of Fast Cut QLD Pty Ltd.

Having grown up around the CSDAA, Brock is passionate about advancing the industry, particularly the Certificate III in Concrete Sawing and Drilling. When he’s not working, Brock enjoys cars, bikes, and spending quality time with his wife and two young children.

We congratulate Brock on his new role and look forward to watching the CSDAA move forward under his leadership.

The CSDAA would also like to say thank you to our outgoing President Mario Gomizelj for his dedication over the last 12 years with his voluntary service on the CSDAA Executive Committee in various roles.

To our QLD members and those members with family and friends across Southeast Queensland and Northern New South Wales, we’re thinking of you as Cyclone Alfred approaches.

Here are a few key things to keep in mind:

1️⃣ Stay Updated – Keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) for the latest alerts and warnings. Reliable info is key during times like this.

2️⃣ Emergency Contacts – Save these numbers now:

SES (Storm/Flood Help): 132 500

Community Recovery Hotline: 1800 173 349

Police link (Non-Urgent Police Matters): 131 444

3️⃣ Get Your Home & Family Ready –

✔ Secure any loose outdoor items

✔ Check your emergency kit (water, food, medications, torches, batteries)

✔ Have a plan if you need to evacuate, including a safe place for pets

4️⃣ During the Cyclone –

💨 Stay indoors and away from windows

💧 Never drive through floodwaters—If it’s flooded, forget it

🔦 Keep a battery-powered radio handy for updates

5️⃣ After the Cyclone –

⚠ Be cautious of fallen power lines, debris, and unstable structures

📻 Wait for official updates before going outside or returning home

Check in on your loved ones, especially the elderly or those who may need extra help. And if you’re feeling anxious, you’re not alone—reach out for support.

On behalf of the CSDAA team, please, take care, and look after each other.

The NSW Government is introducing a silica worker register to help monitor the health of at-risk workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica dust.

SafeWork NSW want to hear from past, and present workers and employers in construction, manufacturing, mining and tunnelling, as well as anyone interested in this subject.

To have your say, complete their short survey, or upload a written submission, via this link: https://www.haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/silica-worker-register

Your feedback will help ensure the silica worker register reflects industry needs and protects workers and the community. Have your say by Sunday, 3 November 2024.

Engineered Stone Ban Effective Today 1-7-2024

A reminder for everyone that as of the 1-7-2024, a ban on engineered stone has come into place Australia wide.

While this may not directly impact our industry on a daily basis, there may be instances where we encounter pre-installed or ‘legacy engineered stone’—for example, when coring holes in benchtops, splashbacks, or cutting flooring.

It is crucial that we adhere to the formal process outlined by Safe Work Australia during such tasks. Failure to do so could have serious consequences. For detailed guidelines, please refer to the Safe Work Australia Guide: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/esban

We have published new guidance to help persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) prepare for the engineered stone ban, which comes into effect on 1 July 2024.

The guidance provides information about the scope of the ban, obligations relating to working with legacy engineered stone and ensuring any processing is controlled, and how exemptions from the ban will work.

Read the guidance on our engineered stone ban website: http://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/esban.
