WonderPaws Dog Training 🐾 Dog Training for Dog Owners 🐾 The thing about Dogs, is that they have their innate way of instantly getting into your heart. How nice would that feel?

Hello and Welcome to WonderPaws Dog Training

If you’re reading this - then you’re serious about training your dog – so thank you for clicking on WonderPaws! They give you those β€˜puppy dog eyes’ – you go β€˜awww... looook.... soooo cute’ and before you know it, they’re chewing your favourite shoes, running around the house with your bra, or pulling you across the road to meet another dog! If you have a dream of owning a dog that listens 1st time, every time, then I can help you make that dream a reality. Imagine your dog walking nicely on a lead and completely ignoring that other dog. Or your dog doesn’t find your bra or your favourite pair of shoes exciting at all! What I can offer, is tailor made training to suit your specific needs. I will come to your home and train your dog. I will provide the equipment you’ll need. I’ll help you understand why dogs do what they do, and give you simple and easy instructions to reach your dream. You’ll be amazed by the difference in the 1st session. Now you know what I can do for you, let me introduce myself......

My name is Jools, and I’m a Nationally Qualified Dog Trainer (NDTF) I grew up in Birmingham (UK), Keir (my husband) is from Manchester (And no! He doesn’t know Liam or Noel Gallagher from Oasis!). We’ve been together since 2003, and we emigrated to Melbourne in 2011. Like most people, I’ve always had dogs in my life, but I’ve naturally developed β€˜a knack’ with training them (Iβ€˜m known as the Barbara Woodhouse of the family!)
I taught Socks (my Aunts dog) to collect the newspaper from the letterbox and drop it at her feet! With Foster, (the 1st dog I ever owned), I taught him to crawl under a blanket when he let one rip! Paddy (our current dog) knows how to spell the word DOG! Dogs are amazingly, loving animals, and once you’ve developed a concrete gateway of communication with them – they will do pretty much anything! Like us humans, we learn every day. Allow me to help you train your dog so they will do what you ask 1st time, every time.

Any owner or dog trainer would agree πŸ˜ƒ

That getting the oval to yourself can feel like winning the lottery πŸ₯³

Even though its great to have the space to ourselves, I'm always checking my surroundings

If I see other owners getting near the entrance, or waiting outside I'll always head the other way and leave

I would NEVER put Olan, my dog, or any of my clients dogs at risk of being in an oval with a dog I don't know

Put simply - its just too risky!

Does the owner have complete control of their dog? Is their dog aggressive, reactive, nervous, anxious, old, has an injury.... so many variables to consider

What do you do when you have the oval to yourself?

Do you feel the same way - excited to have the space?

Are you courteous of other owners?

I met 12wk old Sparky the other day

OMGosh.... AD-OOOOR-ABLE doesn't come close πŸ₯Ή

He had some energy to burn off so we got to work with some get-it game and recall

Then went inside and tethered him to help hil chill out

Then we challenged his mind a little with some Leave It Training - he smashed it out the ballpark πŸ’ͺ🏼

Training a young dog starts the moment tou get them home

Teaching them how to navigate the world. Be neutral around things, people and dogs. Help build confidence. Build a relationship that is solid as a rock.

All those little wins at the start eventually come together and you'll find yourself looking back thinking I'm glad I put allllll that work in because we have a dog we can take anywhere πŸ‘πŸ»

Why I educate owners in multidog households AND of the importance to pet one dog at a time πŸ˜‰

House Rules for our dogs

Taking Turns for Affection

One rule we always have for our dogs (and for young dogs in particular), is that only one dog at a time is allowed in our personal space for affection.

If one dog comes up, then other dogs mustn’t approach until given permission once we’ve asked the first dog to move away.

When fights happen in households, it’s usually over competition for something of value (resources). Food & toys are obvious ones, but access to people’s personal space along with attention/affection can be one of the most common times a fight can occur.

Often times one dog will want attention as soon as they see another dog is getting it, and that can lead to problems.

So rather than allowing the dogs to control interactions & access to our space, teaching them that WE decide & they must take turns is a great way to mitigate any issues later on.

Omen is learning that if Halo approaches for a pat, he can ask for one by politely waiting his turn but he cannot push in. Halo also knows to move away when asked.

Teaching a dog not to chase wildlife can be hard

Its a natural behaviour for any dog to chase something that moves

Puppies can chase leaf that blows in the breeze....

The movement of 1 dog can trigger another to chase it....

Herding breeds can chase cars, bicycles & joggers

Paddy has been easy to teach not to chase anything that moves - his prey drive is quite low

Unless its a cat - he HATES cats (all because he's been attacked by them πŸ™ˆ)

So.... what would your dog chase if it moved... if anything?

And would they chase the cockatoo in this short clip? πŸ€”πŸ€”

πŸ”Š Sound on for this one πŸ”Š

The power of spatial pressure πŸ’ͺ🏼

Spatial pressure being closure of the gate and owner's body language by blocking her exit

Zoey quickly learnt that rushing through the gate meant the gate closed but being calm and waiting meant the gate opened

She started to change her behaviour by being patient, listening to her owner and waiting

Prior to this session, Zoey literally bolted out the gate & up the hill πŸ™ˆ which was unsafe because her other owner is recovering from a back injury 😒 so her owners needed to create some calm 🐾

Notice how there is no food rewards 🧐

Zoey's reward for not bolting is the gate opening and her punishment/correction for bolting through the gate was the gate closing + body language from her owner

Rewards come in aaaallllll shapes and sizes for dogs when used correctly

Next came leash pressure going up the hill.... she pulled - we stopped - she gave eye contact and leash goes slack --> we move forward and repeated that till she connected the dots amd walked nice and calm πŸ’ͺ🏼

Ramps for dogs are an excellent idea

Especially for young dogs who's bones and joints aren't fully formed yet - major or intensive jumping, running up & down things can cause them damage which, sometimes, can be life changing

Eddie's owner mentioned in passing at their recent session, how Eddie was nervous of the boot-ramp.... and me being me said 'we'll spend some time on that at the end to work on that'

And thats exactly what we did - we set the scene and got to work 🐾

We cued 'Boot' --> lured him up the ramp --> markedYES and rewarded

We cued 'Down' --> lured him down the ramp --> marked YES and rewarded

Very quickly, after a few reps, we'd say the cue, the lure was being phased out and we'd Mark YES and reward and Eddie was using the ramp like a pro πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Creating clarity for dogs is crucial for them to understand what we want from them and its our job to help them

If we expect them to 'know stuff' - we fail them before we even start πŸ™ˆ

Team Eddie are doing a fabulous job and he's showing signs of becoming a lovely family dog πŸ’™

I first met Luna when she was an adolescent, 1yr old, pain in the a$$ 🀣

She was chewing furniture, pulled like a freight train, chased birds and had zero engagement with her owner 😬

Me & her owner got to work and I can honestly say, Team Luna have gone from strength to strength πŸ’ͺ🏼

She's now off leash and her recall is πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

She's Ecollar trained πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

She goes with her owners to their favourite liquid establishment 🍺 and chills out πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

She's simply loving life πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

AND... her owner keeps training Luna on new skills such as walking across a suspension bridge made for kids (its wobbly. its noisey. its quite narrow and its challenges Luna on another level)

This little video is evidence that THE WORK... WORKS πŸ‘πŸ» and I've loved every minute of Team Luna's journey πŸ₯Ή
