Our two golden girls: Fiona and Noodles.

It was at a poultry auction in Kyneton one year that I saw a dozen eggs for sale, labeled with “gold pencilled Hamburghs”.

I’d never had a Hamburgh before nor even seen a pencilled one so I suggested to my husband perhaps we should put on a bid.

“We don’t need any more chickens” he said, and when I wasn’t looking, he had already placed a bid.

That afternoon we went home with three chickens and 24 fertile eggs.

Fast forward to today, Fiona & Noodles are the only two pencilled Hamburghs we kept, and they are both extremely active and flighty.

Unfortunately Fiona has a few health issues, but as a positive result of being handled a little more for extra care she’s also become a lot more tame than Noodles!

Cheeky Noodles normally likes to keep humans at a distance, but this time I used some poultry mix to bribe her to come close for a sister photo 😆

Misty has been looking so good lately after her first moult has finished. Her comb has gone red again and I think she’s ready to get back to laying again. 💖

Blackie & Bonnie were twinning today.

It’s funny that despite being younger of the two, Blackie appears to have outranked Bonnie. You can tell when they are enthusiastically sharing the poultry mix, Bonnie received a gentle peck towards the end.

Regardless of pecking orders, I can confirm they are good friends 😆💖

It’s cold in Melbourne. Dove has become puffy !

Darling Flora is a house chicken today after finding her puffed up and lethargic in the garden today.

It seems she still has an appetite but is very low on energy. I’ve given her some starter/grower mash (it’s high protein and contains probiotics) and some fresh water with Avi-Lyte (poultry multivitamins).

Fingers crossed that some time indoors will help perk her up. Sometimes just having easy access to food away from the other chickens (plus being in a nice warm temperature indoors) can make all the difference 🤞🏻

Two cheeky girls on our deck railing. Being good flyers they often fly up here for attention.
Sometimes I come out and reward their cheeky behaviour with treats, creating a positive (but negative) feedback loop 😆😆😆

Conehead went to the vet today.
It was a check up after recently being bullied and having some neurotic beak chattering and diarrhoea. Those signs have cleared up after two days inside but I thought it was worth going to the just in case!

They were very helpful in giving her a much needed feather cut!!
Usually I do this once a year but it was very overdue after growing new feathers this year.

So good news all around, especially for Coney girl!
