Over summer, the Salt Water Lake at Westgate Park (near Melbourne’s Westgate Bridge) transforms into a stunning bright pink thanks to two salt-loving microorganisms: Dunaliella salina (a microalgae) and Halobacteria cutirubrum (a bacterium). These tiny organisms produce carotenoids, natural pigments that create the lake’s vibrant color!

Unlike harmful “red tides” found in some marine environments, this pink lake is completely safe. But the color doesn’t last forever—in just the last few days, the lake has shifted back to a rich green.

🔬 Swipe to the last photo and take a closer look under the microscope: Dunaliella and Spirulina (a squiggly-shaped cyanobacterium) are both present.

These microorganisms are widely used in cosmetics and dietary supplements for their antioxidant properties.
At Melbourne Polytechnic, our students explore the fascinating world of microalgae in Agricultural Systems & Technology, a first-year subject in the Bachelor of Agriculture degree.

Think our degree is all about agriculture? Think again! Over summer, students have the chance to dive into unique subjects like Restoration of Aquatic Habitat. Here, our class is hard at work at Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary, searching for Asian shore crabs - an invasive species threatening local ecosystems. Hands-on, real-world experience in action!
