Fonda La Clinica Chilean Latin American September Festival 2015

Messrs Councillors City of Greater Dandenong,
The Chilean Latin American September Festival has been taking place at the Sandown Racecourse over the past 10 years during the third week-end of the month of September.
We have received advice from Sandown Park Management that next year’s Festival cannot eventuate during the third week.
We had verbal confirmation from Sandown Management for the 2016 Festival for Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September, 2016. These discussions were held prior to this current year’s 10th Anniversary festival.
The management of Sandown offered as alternatives the week-end prior or a week later. These are not feasible dates to hold the festival in, as this would equate to an economic catastrophe, as one week earlier the Chilean people are in mourning (for it coincides with 11th September, 1973, a date that is forever associated with a bloody coup-de-etat, and deposing and murder of the elected president, Mr. Salvador Allende, and many other thousand Chilean country men and women). A week later, the Chilean community does not celebrate, hence holding the festival on the date nearest to the 18th of September is KEY to the success of the festival.
We have made several efforts to arrange for an alternative venue and have visited several sites, none of which meet our requirements to organize the event.
Not being able to organize the event on the desired dates will bring irreparable consequences to our Hispanic speaking community, diverse community groups: folkloric groups, musical bands and charities, as well as small traders, services providers, staff and the many thousands that now look forward at attending this event. This would also equate to an enormous backwards move in community development and a huge loss to our culture.
The Festival used to be organized at the Dandenong Show Grounds, but the Council pressured us to move to Sandown Park because the Showgrounds did not meet the appropriate conditions to implement an event as large as the Chilean Latin American September Festival.
A considerable investment has been made in decorations for Sandown Park, with thousands of dollars spent on the different flags and decorations. These have been tailored made to Sandown Park, and will be lost if the Festival does not proceed at Sandown. Also a lot of investment on experience and training.

The City of Greater Dandenong is our main Sponsor, hence we seek that your Counsellors participate actively in lobbying Sandown Management to change the decision and facilitate for the Festival to take place on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September 2016.

We urge you to please lobby with Sandown Management to maintain the now iconic Festival during the third week of September.
