Unfortunately we absolutely cannot take on any more pigeons at the moment!

As planned earlier this year, we were meant to close to intakes in late May, but have welcomed in a few last stragglers over the last 1-2 weeks. Lucky last is this old fellow who somehow found his way into lost and found! He is 20 years old and we could not turn away an old soul who needs a retirement home.

I apologise for the delay in responses this week (and in advance for next week also) where it might be harder to reach us than usual!

Whilst we are closed for new birds, that doesn’t mean caring for the current ones stops. Thanks to those who have applied recently so we can have intake space for when we open on the 27th!

This is the face of a pigeon who had every reason to give up but didn’t! Lion is a domestic Birmingham roller pigeon and at only a few weeks old, was attacked by a bird of prey that resulted in a hole the size of a 20c coin in her tiny little bird crop.

By the time she was caught and delivered to us safely, it had already been 3-4 days. This also meant she had not been able to eat or drink for the same length of time, and had a reduced body condition as such. With an older wound and following physical decline, many would have chosen to put her to sleep.

But in spite of it all, Lion still had the most spirited glance and demeanour that begged for a second chance! Unfortunately this took place on Labour Day so we had to wait another ~24 hours for surgery to stitch it up, but in the meantime debriefed and dressed the wound, started on antibiotics and pain relief, and subcutaneous fluids to account for the dehydration.

Unfortunately I was unable to deliver Lion at the required time in the morning so we had to also organise a very expensive uber to get her there. 😅😂

After 50 stitches, our vet team was able to stitch up the crop wall!

Sadly after 2ish weeks post-op, Lion was still underweight, this often indicates an underlying issue which was confirmed when a few days later the crop ruptured again and once more seed was coming out 🫠

We agreed that if the second surgery failed we would consider humane euthanisia as it would be likely the crop was too damaged to regain adequate function. During this procedure they were able to debride more infected and necrotic matter that had developed.

To everyone’s pleasure Lion didn’t have complications after this one and began to get fat and (even more) happy in no time!

Lion has grown up to be very grateful for our help and is now looking for her forever home where she’d love to have a special person to appreciate.

Lion’s care exceeded over $1000 and we would be so if you could contribute to her invoices so we can keep giving pigeons 2nd and 3rd chances 🙏

Meet Bohemian Rhapsody 🎶

When Bo was found lost and wandering the streets of west Melbourne, he knew he’d have to find somewhere safe before he was in danger! Thankfully a kind person was able to help Bo out and deliver him to us.

Bo’s story is.. interesting. Adorned with a 2008 ring, Bo would be 18 years old this year. However, some research into the ring has posed some questions about the validity of this identification, as a result, Bo could be 18 as the ring says OR he might be a younger boy, we cannot say for sure!

Either way, Bo is still dreaming of a home where he can do the fandango for a love interest! We think Bo would be happiest in a home with another pigeon friend and an adopter who is patient to see him come out of his shell. Bo’s not the biggest fan of being snuggled yet, but he does fly to your hand for treats.

This special boy is Cupid’s Arrow and he is looking for his happy ending!

Unfortunately due to circumstances that are no fault of his own, he has been returned and is looking forward to bringing love into another home.

Cupid came in initially with a healed coracoid fracture which has impaired his flying abilities. He doesn’t let that get him down though, and thoroughly enjoys himself as a ground dweller!

Cupid is a sweet, friendly boy who would love to be the solo pigeon of the household or a companion to another pigeon friend.

Did you know pigeon couples are our least adopted category?

If you’re looking into pigeons, bringing home a bonded pair means they come with a companion and you can save two lives at once!

If none of the listed pairings take your interest, we can also set up speed dating for a DIY pairing! This is something that is also popular with adopters looking for a companion for their current pigeon.

We often waive any fees for couples as a means of encouraging adopters to consider taking them home! 💵

FAQs about adopting a duo of pigeons can be found here: https://frecklesfellowship.org/should-i-get-one-pigeon-or-two/

Enjoy a few updates of married couples who have recently found their happily ever after.

Beluga Whale is a diva who knows her worth and expects to be treated accordingly!

Found as a lost domestic tumbler pigeon unable to feed herself and sheltering on roofs, Beluga has done quite the 180 into the sass queen she is today. She likes waiting at the door of her cage to be fed pigeon lollies, and if she’s feeling brave (and has confirmed your worth), she will do a little flirty spin and dance for you.

Beluga would enjoy gracing the home of someone who is patient and happy to be at her beck and call, but would also enjoy being a companion for a monsieur pigeon!

F***y… ungrateful… liceface… found on doorstep and nearly died… this pigeon goes by many names!

F***y was only a few weeks old when someone noticed him looking very out of place at their door! The clock was already ticking with f***y being a gorgeous Indian fantail pigeon- who are domesticated and do not last long outdoors. And that was even before we discovered they had already been subject to predation.

Fortunately, our super awesome vet Dr Kelly and partner Peter were able to rescue him! It was not good news: F***y had sustained several deep wounds all over their body, including two particularly concerning ones on their eye and abdomen, and on top of all of this was riddled with lice!

F***y was so weak he couldn’t even stand and we were worried he was going to pass away. 🙁

In spite of the odds, Kelly was able to stabilise F***y, but it would be a while until he was out of the woods yet. F***y had no interest in food still and was having trouble keeping any down. Given the context, it was very likely F***y had become septic.

However, pigeons are very resilient animals. F***y had a spark in his eyes and even whilst not eating, was up and walking around to slap people with his wings! Hence the nickname ungrateful.

So we did everything we could to get him to the other side!!! Dr Kelly was still looking after him so he could get all the fancy treatments. Slowly but surely F***y began to rapidly improve and had started eating and going in the right direction 💪 Unfortunately F***y’s injured eye was damaged beyond repair and they are now blind in it. But this is not a big problem for F***y!

It has been a few months now, and F***y is brighter than ever and looking for their forever home. F***y would like to be a companion bird indoors, or with another friend in a relaxed environment.

Many thanks to Dr Kelly who definitely is F***y’s saviour!
