“I grew up in a village and we didn’t have a vet, and my dog was bitten by a snake,” says Dr Soo Ming, one of our veterinarians at Lort Smith Campbellfield. “He died because we couldn’t get him help. I thought, ‘humans get doctors, animals should have doctors too.’ That’s why I became a vet.”
Dr Soo Ming graduated in 2006 and spent more than 10 years working in the UK before moving to Australia. “I’ve always been passionate about helping pets who need it most,” she says. “That’s why I’m here with Lort Smith. We can give something back to the community, and I really enjoy that.”
Dr Soo Ming is continually inspired by the people she meets. “Some clients go all the way to help animals that have been through so much. The adopters that come here, they give these animals a new life, and I think that’s very beautiful.”
Education is another area close to her heart. “Keeping a pet is not just keeping a pet, we need to make sure their wellbeing is being met, from their environment to their behaviour and their feelings.” She says, “When you’ve got more awareness about pets, they get the care that they require.”
She says she has seen an improvement in pet care over the years, “Back in the day we saw heaps of fleas because no one bought flea treatment, now you barely see fleas. I think that’s very good and shows a change in attitude.”
We are grateful to have veterinarians like Dr Soo Ming, whose compassion and dedication support the wellbeing of our community’s animals.

Little 10-week-old Mochi was recently brought to Lort Smith in North Melbourne after being found alone in a backyard and injured when a folding chair accidentally fell on her. Unable to move her left back leg and with swelling that continued to grow, there were initial concerns that she may have suffered a fracture.
After X-rays ruled out any broken bones, our veterinary team performed further testing and discovered that the swelling was actually an abscess. This was carefully drained, and Mochi is on her way to recovery.
This brave little kitten is now heading into foster care to continue her healing in a safe and comfortable environment. Mochi is expected to make a full recovery, and we can’t wait to see her enjoy the bright, happy future she deserves.

Meet Neville, a four-year-old Aussie Bulldog and all-around top bloke, also known as ol’ mate Nev. With a big heart, an even bigger smile, and a talent for melting hearts with his cuddly charm, Nev has quickly become a staff favourite. He absolutely adores people and will happily soak up every pat, cuddle, and belly rub on offer.
Nev found himself at Campbellfield Adoption Centre when his previous family had to move and could not take him with them. Now he’s on the hunt for a forever home where he can settle in, stretch out, and be treated like the legend he is.
Nev’s an absolute ripper when it comes to playing around, he loves a good game of fetch, a tug-of-war showdown, or just running around the yard until he’s knackered. But after all that action, Nev’s happiest when he’s chilling with his humans, sprawled out on the couch with his big boofhead resting in your lap, soaking up all the pats and cuddles he can get.
He’s looking for an adult-only home where he can be the one and only top dog, and with people who know their way around bulldogs and can keep him on track with routine, exercise, and training.
If you’re keen for a loyal, goofy, people-loving mate swing by the Campbellfield Adoption Centre or chuck in an expression of interest. Nev’s ready to steal your heart!

Like many curious cats, seven-month-old Kogi loves exploring anything that jingles, sparkles, or moves. Unfortunately, her playful nature led to her swallowing a small bell from her collar.
When Kogi arrived at Campbellfield Adoption Centre, she was very unwell and was transferred to our Emergency Department in North Melbourne, where scans revealed the bell had become lodged in her bowel. Our team acted quickly to surgically remove it before it could cause further damage.
Kogi’s story is an important reminder to be mindful of small objects around cats, especially during the festive season. Items like bells, ornament hooks, tinsel, ribbons, and string lights can look like irresistible toys to cats, but they can become dangerous if chewed on or swallowed. Even everyday collar bells can be tempting for cats who like to play or nibble at them.
Kogi has proved that even in the most careful homes, accidents can still happen. But with a little extra awareness, checking decorations for loose parts, placing ornaments on higher branches, keeping small items out of reach, and monitoring toys and accessories, we can help keep our feline friends safe this festive season and beyond.
Kogi has now been adopted and is recovering well from her surgery with her new family, where they can keep a close, loving eye on her.

***Update: Pork Chop has been adopted!!!
Found alone and looking worse for wear, Pork Chop arrived at the adoption centre looking like he’d had a tougher start than any cat deserves. His fur was matted, he was very shy, and he clearly hadn’t felt safe in a long time. But with time, patience, and a whole lot of TLC, this gorgeous boy has now come right out of his shell.
Pork Chop has shown himself to be a gentle soul with a heart as soft as his fluffy coat. He’s the kind of cat that prefers cozy naps, quiet company and gentle affection over anything too chaotic.
Once he knows he’s safe with you, he’ll show his affectionate side by nudging your hand for endless pets and attention while curling up on your lap and purring up a storm.
Pork Chop has Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is a slow-acting virus that eventually makes cats less able to fight off infection. With lots of care and a stable environment, FIV cats can enjoy long, happy lives, and Pork Chop is living proof. He’s healthy, content, and more than ready to share all the love he has to give.
If you’re looking for a low-key, snuggly sidekick with a big heart and an even bigger capacity for love, Pork Chop just might be your soulmate. Stop by the Campbellfield Adoption Centre or fill out an expression of interest today, this pretty boy is more than ready to finally belong to a home of his own.

Our 2025 Christmas Treats & Toy Drive is officially here!
Our shelter is running low on toys and treats, and we’re hoping Victorians will open their hearts and be Santa’s helpers this Christmas. The toys and treats donated help our animals feel safe, comforted and entertained while they wait for the greatest gift of all… a forever home.
Every year we’re blown away by the generosity of our community, and we’re hoping for the same amazing support again this year.
You can drop donations off in person at our Campbellfield Adoption Centre or at Lort Smith Animal Hospital in North Melbourne. Prefer to post them? That works too!
So when you’re shopping for your own pet this Christmas, please consider adding an extra treat or toy to give to a shelter animal. Your support means the world to us.

Zack is living proof that maybe cats do have nine lives.
Pierina, Zack’s mum, realised something was wrong when her eight-floor apartment balcony door was accidently left open. Her heart dropped when she saw one of her cats, Nube, sitting outside, but Zack had vanished.
“I checked everywhere,” she recalls. “I knocked on neighbours’ doors, searched all the common areas, walked up and down the building all night.” In the morning, the building cleaner approached her with news, a cat had been seen hiding in a bush. It was Zack.
Zack had fallen eight storeys off the balcony.
He was rushed to our Emergency Department in North Melbourne. Against all odds, he hadn’t injured his head or pelvis, but his right hind leg wasn’t so lucky. He had fractured 4 bones in his back leg and suffered severe ligament damage. Despite our best efforts, the leg was too badly injured and had to be amputated.
Our Pet Care Crisis Fund was able to help pay for the surgery Zack so desperately needed.
“It was very hard because he needed surgery as soon as possible,” Pierina says. “I’m not a permanent resident, so I couldn’t apply for loans. I just wanted what was best for him.”
Pierina tells us that she has always brought her pets to Lort Smith, and the idea of losing him was heartbreaking. “If it wasn’t for the Pet Care Crisis Fund, I would have had to surrender him.” She says.
“Lort Smith helped me so much. It would have been so painful to give him up. It’s amazing that we get to stay together. He’s my first baby.”
Thanks to the generosity of donors, and the love and commitment of his owner, Zack gets to heal at home, exactly where he belongs.

“I’ve always been passionate about animal welfare,” says Dr Si Jie, one of our veterinarians at Lort Smith Campbellfield. “Cases of neglect or abuse have always really affected me. Animals deserve the same care people get.”
After graduating in 2023, Dr Si Jie joined Lort Smith as a new graduate and has been part of the team for two years. At home, she lives with her two cats, Mavis, her nine-year-old girl, and Gus, her “big boy.”
She loves working at Lort Smith for the variety of cases and the chance to help animals in need. “I’m really interested in shelter medicine, and I appreciate that we support clients who may not have much. The work environment is great too.” she says.
Dr Si Jie’s goal is to keep building her skills, especially in surgery. “I just want to keep becoming a better vet.”
Her advice for pet owners? Don’t dismiss your instincts. “Don’t think you’re paranoid, it’s better to worry about something that may be nothing rather than not bringing them in and it was actually something.”
We’re lucky to have compassionate and dedicated vets like Dr Si Jie caring for our community’s animals.
