Good morning Lions and Lionesses.

Another magical day for our Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society with the unearthing of another Player Photograph for our Pictorial Display at our Museum at Marvel Stadium.

Daniel “Danny” Denis Murphy.

Danny was born on the 22nd of February 1884 which was 149 days after our Fitzroy FC was founded and was recruited to our Maroons from our Fitzroy Juniors FC.

Danny played his only Senior game for our Maroons on the opening Round Saturday the 29th of April 1911 in our 2 point loss to the Melbourne FC at the home of VFL Football the MCG.

Our Fitzroy Football Club had a board split at the end of the 1910 VFL Season, where our President since 1887 Robert W Best MLA (for the City of Fitzroy) was ousted (and his Committee) and replaced by the incoming President Donald Chandler (and his committee), who was a Hardware Merchant and Councillor in Fitzroy.

Donald held the Presidency of our Fitzroy FC until the end of the 1930 VFL Season.

There is a drinking fountain outside the old turnstiles of our Brunswick Street Oval (at the start of the Edinburgh Gardens) that was donated by Donald Chandler.

Danny was one of 7 debutants in his only game with Fitzroy (with Ernie Everett, Jack Furness, Cliff Hutton, Frank Lamont, Tom Moloughney and Eric Watson).

We are still to source a photo of Eric Watson.

Our Danny’s brother Timothy had a son called Daniel Murphy, who was the founder of the famous Dan Murphy Cellars Liquor Stores that still exist to this day.

Danny passed away on the 1st of November 1956 aged 72 only 3 weeks before our city of Melbourne held our first Summer Olympics.

Thank you for representing our Fitzroy FC Danny.

You are “home” now.

Our Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society have only 19 Player Photographs left to source for our Player Pictorial Boards at our Museum at Marvel Stadium Docklands of the 1,157 Fitzroy Football Club players that played at least 1 Senior game for our club in the VFL / AFL from 1897 to 1996.

Good Morning Lions and Lionesses.

Another magical day for our Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society with the unearthing of another Player Photograph for our Fitzroy Football Club Player Pictorial Display at Marvel Stadium.

Douglas “Doug” Oliver Bennett.

Doug was born on the 3rd of December 1894 and was recruited to our Maroons from the Coburg Juniors FC for the 1917 VFL Season making his Fitzroy FC Senior debut in our 3 point loss to the Collingwood FC at their Victoria Park Oval fortress in Round 8 in his number 14 jumper kicking an impressive 2 goals on debut.

Doug played a further 3 Senior games of the remaining 7 Home and Away Season, which were:

Round 9 in our 49 point loss to the Richmond FC at their Punt Road Oval,

Round 11 in our 15 point loss to the Carlton FC at our Brunswick Street Oval

and

Playing his last Home and Away game for our Fitzroy FC in our 19 point win against the Geelong FC at their Corio Oval, which was one of the 17 times we saluted at this venue (and 1 draw) from 45 attempts, from 1897 to 1915 and 1917 to 1940.

Our Maroons scraped into 4th position on the VFL League Ladder with 6 wins, 1 draw and 8 losses (remarkably by losing more games than we won), defeating the Carlton FC by 9 points in the 1st Semi Final at the MCG.

Our Maroons defeated the Collingwood FC in the “Grand Final” 2 weeks later by 6 points at the MCG but as VFL rules stated at the time that if the Minor Premiers (Collingwood) were defeated in the Grand Final they had a right to “challenge” the result.

Challenge the Collingwood side did, defeating our Maroons the very next week by 35 points, at the MCG.

Doug was not selected in any of our 3 Finals Matches.

Doug passed away on the 3rd of March 1975, at the age of 80.

Thanks also to Connors Roberts for his assistance in identifying Doug.

Welcome to our Fitzroy FC Player Pictorial Display Boards at our Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society Museum at Marvel Stadium.

You are “home now” Doug.

Only 20 Player Photographs remain to be sourced to complete our project to obtain an image of all of the 1,157 Fitzroy FC players that played at least 1 Senior Game for our Fitzroy FC in the VFL / AFL from 1897 to 1996.
