MiCare and National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week 2026, held this year from 27 May to 3 June, is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

National Reconciliation Week is to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements to foster reconciliation. This year the theme is “All in: Taking action for reconciliation”, with a strong focus on meaningful and committed action toward reconciliation.

MiCare encourages everyone to get involved in this year’s National Reconciliation Week. A list of events can be found at Reconciliation Australia website. You can also get involved by learning more about the history and significance of National Reconciliation Week or watching a film or series relating to this year’s “all in” theme on SBS.

MiCare is in the process of developing its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to formally commence its reconciliation journey. The RAP will provide a structured framework to strengthen relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, increase cultural awareness across the organisation and embed reconciliation principles into MiCare operations and culture.

The Reflect RAP focuses on learning, reflecting, and building internal capacity, laying the foundation for future RAPs. Through this plan, MiCare will demonstrate leadership and social responsibility, foster culturally safe practices, and established measurable, sustainable actions to contribute meaningfully to reconciliation.

MiCare recognises our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. We thrive, grow, and understand ourselves more deeply when we connect with others. We aim to re-place isolation and surface-level interactions with empathy, courage, and real community. Because when we show up for each other, we strengthen wellbeing, create belonging, and bring our shared humanity to life. Find out more at MiCare.com.au.

On Friday, May 15th, our Volunteers VIC team members, Tanya Saunders and Yao Wang, headed down to the Knox Civic Centre in Wantirna South for an incredible day of networking and community building.

With over 100 passionate participants in attendance, the energy in the room was inspiring. We had the pleasure of speaking directly with more than 20 potential volunteers who are eager to make a difference, and forged exciting new connections with fantastic community groups like the Rotary Club, Scouts, and the Country Women's Association (CWA).

A massive thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth to chat about the power of volunteering. The future of community support in Victoria is looking brighter than ever!

Volunteering brings belonging, community and connection.

To mark the end of National Volunteer Week 2026, it’s time to share a story that captures the heart of being a volunteer.

At MiCare, we bring people together to build stronger communities, deeper connection, and more meaningful care. We take the time to understand each client’s interests, hobbies, and personality, then thoughtfully match them with a volunteer who shares common ground. By starting with connection, we spark genuine friendships and create bonds that grow naturally from the very first meeting.

This is Walter’s story:
“I am originally from Zimbabwe and have lived in Melbourne for 4 years. I speak both English and Shona (a major Bantu language spoken by most of the population in Zimbabwe.). I joined the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme with MiCare in July 2025.

My church program encourages volunteering, and I have always enjoyed spending time with older people. I am fascinated by their stories. For me, I take it as a learning experience - being there for someone else. I feel I have the time to spare to support someone feel less lonely.

It has had a huge impact on me. Volunteering offers a different kind of meaning! Meaning, that is not linked to any financial and purposeful gain, but from the heart. I was paired with Anna, originally from Germany. Anna used to work for a big auto company in Germany. She loves to chat and go for a walk.

I visit Anna once a fortnight at her care home, and we share a walk if the weather is good. When I started visiting her, she would often say to me that she can’t remember much. Now, she is sharing more and more from her past and those memories bring a lot of joy. Anna has led a very full and rewarding life. I particularly remember her telling me about her childhood and early memories and life – I am inspired by her stories and her humbleness.

Everyone should give volunteering a shot; it is very fulfilling. By only sharing a little bit of time, visits make an enormous difference in someone’s life. And MiCare makes it easy – it was such a smooth start to Volunteering. It must have been easy, because I don’t really remember the process! The Volunteer Coordination team helped me build a meaningful friendship with Anna, and there is help along the way if I need it.”

MiCare believes we thrive, grow, and understand ourselves more deeply when we connect with others. We aim to replace isolation and surface-level interactions with empathy, courage, and real community. Because when we show up for each other, we strengthen wellbeing, create belonging, and bring our shared humanity to life.

If Volunteering sounds like something you would like to do, please message us for more information.

Community spirit in action! We hosted Australia’s Big Morning Tea at Overbeek Lodge today to raise donations for the Cancer Council. We had an amazing turnout, with residents from Beatrix Village coming along to support the cause. Special shoutout to the MiMeals team for baking the most amazing (and delicious!) cupcakes for the morning tea.

Thank you to our volunteers

National Volunteer Week runs from May 18 to May 24. At MiCare, we take the time to recognise the amazing impact our volunteers make in Victoria and Queensland.

Volunteers across MiCare give their time generously to support our many volunteer programs. Whether you’re supporting residents with group activities and outings, preparing coffees and cakes, bringing cheer to our kiosks and shops, or supporting youth programs—your contribution makes a real difference in everything we do. From Heyfield to Bendigo (VIC) and Caboolture to Burleigh (QLD), MiCare’s Volunteer Visitors arrive at clients’ front doors—bringing friendship, conversation and genuine connection.

National Volunteer Week is the perfect opportunity to say THANK YOU to all our Volunteers! Without you, we simply couldn’t make the impact we do across Victoria and Queensland. Thank you for spreading joy and kindness, and fostering a supportive community through your volunteer work—we truly value each and every one of our volunteers.

Volunteering is a great way to build new skills, boost mental wellbeing, and forge lasting connections. With over 335 volunteers across MiCare, there is an opportunity to match almost any schedule or lifestyle.
