Over the last 10 years, we've looked after a lot of dogs.
Hundreds of them.
We've loved every one of them, because dogs bring something into our lives that is impossible to explain unless you've experienced it. They make us laugh, they comfort us when we're down, they teach us to slow down, and somehow they heal little pieces of our soul without ever saying a word.
Anyone who knows us knows this isn't just a business for Jeannene and I. Dogs have been our world for a very long time. We've built our lives around them. We've shared our home with them. We've celebrated them, cried for them and loved them as if they were our own.
And in all those years, we've learnt something.
Some dogs are dogs.
Some dogs leave paw prints on your heart.
And then, once in a very rare while, you meet a soul that has somehow found its way into the shape of a dog.
That's Garry.
Garry the Griffon is one of those souls.
I don't know how else to explain it.
There's just something about him.
His energy. His spirit. His gentle nature. The way he looks at you. The way he curls up beside you. The way he quietly works his way into your heart without even trying.
He's not the loudest dog we've ever met.
He's not the cheekiest.
He's not the naughtiest.
He's simply Garry.
And somehow that's more than enough.
After what has been a difficult few months for us, Garry became the first dog to walk through the door and begin this new chapter with us. Looking back, I honestly couldn't think of a better dog to start with.
It felt right.
Like the universe knew exactly who we needed.
We're incredibly grateful to Janelle and Brad for trusting us with their beautiful boy and allowing us to be a small part of his life.
Today is Garry’s birthday.
And while he probably has no idea what all the fuss is about, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate a dog who means far more to us than he'll ever know.
Happy Birthday, Garry.
Thank you for your cuddles.
Thank you for your trust.
Thank you for your beautiful soul.
Thank you for reminding us why we do what we do.
You are one of the special ones, mate.
A once in a lifetime dog.
Or perhaps, a once in a lifetime soul.
We love you to bits and hope we get to celebrate many more birthdays with you in the years ahead.

Today Australia lost a true fighter, a true gentleman and a true inspiration.

Neale Daniher was far more than a football legend. He became a voice for every family devastated by MND. A voice for hope. A voice for resilience. A voice that refused to give up, even when faced with one of the cruellest diseases imaginable.

MND is something that sits very close to our hearts at Bark with Buster.

Our co founder Jeannene Anchen lost her father to MND. It happened so quickly that before the family could even fully understand what was happening, he was gone. Like so many families affected by this horrific disease, the grief never truly leaves you.

Through our dog boarding business, Pet Stays Melbourne, we have proudly supported and donated towards MND awareness and research over the years because we know firsthand the pain, helplessness and heartbreak this disease brings to families.

What Neale Daniher did for the MND community can never be measured.

The awareness he created.
The conversations he started.
The hope he gave families.
The resilience he showed.
The way he kept fighting not only for himself, but for future patients and future families.

That is what made Neale a legend.

People like Neale can never truly be spoken about in the past tense because their spirit continues to live on through every life they touched, every family they inspired and every person they gave strength to during their darkest moments.

Rest well mate.

Australia will miss you physically, but your spirit, courage and legacy will forever live on in this country and in the hearts of everyone affected by MND.

Travel free.

And somewhere beyond this life, I am sure all those who sadly lost their battle with this dreadful disease would have been waiting at the gates to give you the hero’s welcome you truly deserve.

You were a hero here.
And you will always be a hero there too.

🐾 P*e-mail for Dogs: Why Dogs Smell Each Other’s P*e 🐾

Have you ever wondered why your dog stops every few metres on a walk to sniff the same patch of grass or lamppost where another dog has been?

What may seem strange to us is actually one of the most important ways dogs communicate with each other.

At Pet Stays, we like to call it “P*e-mail.” 📬🐕

Dogs experience the world through their nose. With up to 300 million scent receptors, their sense of smell is incredibly powerful. When a dog sniffs another dog's urine, they’re not just smelling p*e — they’re reading a whole story.

From a single sniff, dogs can learn:

🐾 Whether the dog was male or female
🐾 The age of the dog
🐾 Whether the dog is healthy
🐾 If a female dog is in heat
🐾 Whether the dog is neutered
🐾 How long ago the dog passed by

It’s essentially the dog version of social media — checking who has been in the neighbourhood and what’s going on.

Dogs also leave their own “messages” by scent marking during walks, telling other dogs things like:

“I was here.”
“This is my territory.”
“I live nearby.”

That’s why sniffing during walks is so important. It gives dogs mental stimulation, reduces stress, and helps them understand their environment.

So next time your dog stops to sniff a tree, pole, or patch of grass, remember…

Meet Duke. What a beautiful Labrador he is and one of our new walking partners. We cared for his two brothers Lenny and Oscar for many years until they passed away. Duke has the best manners. Walks so well on lead and sits on command. It’s amazing living in Moonee Valley for years and still finding hidden gems to take a walk with dogs.
