JUST after dawn on a bone-cold morning in June, a knackery truck rumbled onto the property of the Victoria Police Mounted Branch in Attwood, on Melbourne’s northern outskirts.

Toby and I were very fortunate to be one of a few people involved in helping Sir Sean Connery make his way to Edgar's Mission. Sir Sean is in safe hands now. Please read his story and support Edgar's Mission, such a fabulous haven for all animals.

Meet Sean Connery –shaken not stirred.

Veterinary staff enlist in their profession due to their love of animals, dedicating their lives to helping animals in need, restoring them to good health and ensuring good management strategies are adopted for the day to day care of all creatures great and small. Ending the lives of healthy animals is not something that comes easy for them, and neither it should. Yet this was the very real prospect they faced when a lovely young abandoned rooster, whom we have christened Sean Connery, came to their clinic. Knowing full well loving and safe homes for these hapless Casanovas are few and far between and uneasy in their thoughts they were of what would follow.

Perhaps it was his distinctive masculine voice that melted the heart of the vet nurse who made the call, or maybe it was the cute and distinctive ‘ear muffs’ of this beautiful lavender Araucana rooster that won her heart. Whatever it was Sean Connery is certainly lucky he got to live twice!

Stories such Sean Connery Rooster, we sadly hear all too often. They leave us disturbed as we beg the question - how can society not be stirred into action? If puppies or kittens were routinely being killed simply because of their gender there would rightly be outrage, yet everyday gentle, happy and healthy roosters like dear Sean Connery meet such a grisly fate.

"If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others... why wouldn't we?" www.edgarsmission.org.au

Rescued With Love shared RSPCA Qld Inc.'s photo.
It's time to support RSPCA Qld. Remember you wanted large orgs to work with rescue? Well, they do. Remember you wanted Adoption Days? Well they do. They save cats with cat flu, under age kitties and old dogs. YUP - they transport dogs from way up north and drive them down to Brissy. They listened to you. Now you need to hear their call for help. Send as many people to RSPCA Qld to find a new family member. Try fostering for them. Can you take a kitten home? Can you volunteer to walk a dog? Can you share this message? When I needed help I asked RSPCA Qld - and they responded. They have led the way for change in this country. Lets support them. Share their posts, check their websites for a new pet, and get on and foster and support. Lets help the surge of pets in need move quickly. Yes, we can. x

- Once again we are struggling to find homes for animals in our care and many of our shelters are at capacity with animals, with more also waiting in the wings. Just across the Easter break we had even more pets flock to our doors for help. Our RSPCA Centre at Dakabin in particular struggled from the influx. You can read more here: http://www.couriermail.com.au/questnews/moreton/caboolture-tops-list-for-stray-and-surrendered-dogs-over-easter/story-fni9r1i7-1226896018378

Did you know that RSPCA Qld Inc. also works with over 50 rescue groups across the state and currently we have 41 pets waiting for rescue assistance? Without the support from rescue groups we would struggle to find homes for our pets even further.

So if you think you can adopt a pet, or know of someone looking to add a furry, feathery or scaly friend to their family, please visit your local RSPCA centre,

Out of the Ashes

"I was just sitting here looking up the blackened hill when the ashes began to move,” retold the kindly, albeit exhausted resident of Diggings Road, Willowmavin. Diggings Road suffered terribly from the fierce fires that erupted last Sunday and was to do so on several further occasions in the days that followed. Diggings Road is also just a little more than a stone’s throw from Edgar’s Mission. “I looked again, and realised that past the fallen fences and twisted wire gates, it wasn’t the ashes I was seeing but four head of young cattle followed by four older Angus heifers coming over the hill from the blackened scrub.” Ushering the resolute octet into a yard, hay and water was given with the hope that an owner too would soon emerge, for these fences were not designed to contain hungry and robust bovines.

With a shed on a neighbouring property soon igniting and spot fires surrounding them, the cattle were to repeatedly dodge a fire bullet more than once as another young heifer miraculously appeared in the yard in the days that followed. From whence she came or why she had taken the ‘scenic’ route to hook up with her buddies will never be known, but she too was thrown a lifeline. While the owner of the four larger cattle was quickly determined to be an absentee farmer (who readily agreed to surrender the animals to Edgar’s Mission) no one had come forth for the remaining five youngsters. With her nerves stretched to the limit and her fences going the same way fast, Edgar’s Mission was only too happy to assist the animals and a kindly human in need. With our daily patrols bringing forth more tales of terrifying deaths and the grizzly sights of dead stock, we too welcomed a good news story that told of some animals who had somehow managed to survive.

The easy option would have been to simply run the stock the short distance up the road to the secure yards of the sanctuary, however due to the frequent flare ups and spot fires and subsequent attendance by CFA vehicles, it was not safe to do so. And so, one by one the cattle were ushered into a horse float for the ever so brief ride to the sanctuary. However, as we left the property for the last time the owner of the five youngsters arrived to claim them. “But they are pets right?” we enquired. The answer made our hearts sink. Here were these incredibly brave and intrepid creatures who had not only cheated death on several occasions but who had then had the good fortune to reach the sanctuary of Edgar’s Mission, only to have their lifeline snatched from them at the very last moment. To hand them back would, in effect, be signing their death warrants.

These are indeed the hardest of times, the times when you look to the heavens and ask yourself why but then look to your heart to find a way to make it right. And so, after pleading the case of these brave young creatures to no avail, it was our cheque book that eventually sealed the deal. But what I wrote today was far more than merely a cheque, for I had secured a kinder future for the cattle I wasn’t about to let down.

Out of the ashes of Victoria’s worst bushfires since Black Saturday have emerged many tales of tragedy and terrible injustice but so too of miraculous survival and the indomitable determination of many individuals, both human and otherwise, to survive the most inhospitable of conditions. Out of the ashes, nine cows found their way to Edgar’s Mission and we found a way to secure their happy ever after. And out of the ashes, we found that elusive ray of light that we call hope and we were once again reminded that kindness is always the way.

A beautiful sanctuary that attracts beautiful people.

February 14th is traditionally recognised as Valentine’s Day, a day on which romance fills the air and couples declare their love. But today, we here at Edgar’s Mission celebrated February 14th as our day of thanks. The incredible crisis we have faced over the past week, a crisis we were not sure we could ever survive, has reminded us time and again of the one thing we truly do believe in, and that is the human heart’s immense capacity for kindness.
A special note of unending thanks to;

Latest from Edgar's Mission - and it is good news :-)

All quiet on the western front

and eastern, northern and southern. No new smoke or ash, no emergency service vehicles in the area, nor can they be heard in the distance. The odd chopper flies overhead every now and then. A rather uneventful night, save the flashing lights from vehicles in the early hours of this morning at our corner as tankers were refilled. With little to no wind again today and rain forecast for this afternoon we feel a great deal more comfortable but we know we can never be complacent. We have commenced moving some animals back to their paddocks and look forward to the return later today (all things going well) of some of our evacuated residents. Dare I say breakfast beckons….

10.30 pm Update.

Our fire watch patrol notation for just now is ‘all clear’. Watches will continue throughout the night. Despite another flare up from the Diggings Road fire (directly south of Edgar’s Mission) this afternoon the threat was very quickly controlled with tankers and water bombers. Once again the CFA have protected our community. To the many people who have offered to assist in evacuating our animals our sincere thanks indeed, however our area is under a police blockade. No one is allowed into the area and should we leave we will not be permitted to return. Here’s hoping for an uneventful night, calmer days, more sleep and RAIN, RAIN and more RAIN!!!

Thank you all once again for your good wishes and positive thoughts, we cannot tell you how much it means to us all!

Update Edgar's Mission

We thank you all once again for your love and concern for our beautiful rescued residents. We trust these happy images of our evacuated residents enjoying suburban life will make you smile as they did us. Apologies to surrounding residents for our vocal roosters!!

The current situation on the ground here at the sanctuary is ‘watch and act’. Fire activity has flared again in Diggings Road, not too far off but the wonderful CFA were swiftly on hand grading fire breaks and putting out the fire. We will forever remain vigilant.
